Base pay range:
$99,779.00/yr - $184,879.00/yr
Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program.
You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Primary purpose: Serve as a consulting psychologist for a variety of medical/surgical teams, conducting brief cognitive/psychological assessments and brief problem‑focused treatment interventions.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship:
You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply.
English language proficiency:
Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 – Part II – Chapter 3 – section A – paragraph 3j.
Education:
To qualify for a GS‑0180 Psychologist you must possess a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) – the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) – or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed, OR have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and in addition successfully complete a re‑specialization program meeting both APA or CPA accreditation and relevance to the assignment.
Internship Requirement:
Must have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program accredited by APA or CPA (or acceptable VHA programs) and consistent with the assignment.
Licensure:
Candidates must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Exception for Non‑Licensed Applicants:
Non‑licensed applicants may receive a temporary ‘graduate psychologist’ appointment at GS‑11 or GS‑12 for up to two years under 38 U.S.C. 7405(a)(1)(D), with care provided only under supervision of a licensed psychologist.
Grandfathering Provision:
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees meeting criteria.
Grade Determinations:
Experience and KSAs requirements differ by grade (GS‑11, GS‑12, GS‑13).
Preferred Experience:
Holds a full unrestricted license, crisis intervention, case management, evidence‑based psychotherapy, virtual telemental health, veteran population experience, assessment instrument experience.
Responsibilities
Serve as Staff Psychologist on an interdisciplinary outpatient mental‑health team (BHIP), providing evidence‑based psychotherapy (individual, group, couples/family therapy) and psychoeducation.
Conduct brief cognitive/behavioral therapy approaches, emphasizing time‑limited evidence‑based treatments.
Administer and interpret a variety of psychological assessment tools and perform psychological interviews, testing, and assessment for seriously mentally ill patients and other conditions.
Recognize complicating factors such as substance abuse, medical/neurological conditions, personality disorders, and co‑morbid substance abuse and psychiatric conditions.
Use modalities to treat mental disorders and provide adjunctive interventions for medical disorders and crisis management.
Respond to patient crisis situations promptly, providing suicide risk assessment, safety planning, and triage services for patients at elevated risk.
Consult with medical center staff regarding patient care issues and maintain effective communication with other disciplines and treatment providers.
Participate in team‑related activities, attend team/program meetings, monthly psychology staff meetings, and comply with psychology peer‑review procedures.
Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Recruitment/Relocation Incentive may be authorized for a highly qualified individual.
Physical Requirements
Moderate lifting up to 44 pounds.
Moderate carrying up to 44 pounds.
Pushing for 30 minutes.
Walking/standing for up to 3 hours.
Repeated bending for 1 hour.
Rapid mental and muscular coordination.
Near vision correctable to 13 inches‑16 inches.
Hearing (aid may be permitted).
Duties and Benefits
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Competitive salary with regular increases; higher step rate may be determined for higher qualifications or special needs.
Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time off per year (13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays). Credit toward annual leave possible based on prior work or military service.
Parental Leave: Up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave after 12 months of employment.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25 % of eligible costs (max $416.66/month).
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5 % VA contribution. Insurance: federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care.
