Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a youth-centered nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, social‑emotional learning, academic enrichment, and creative expression, we create safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to grow, thrive, and succeed. Role Overview We are seeking a Volunteer Real Estate Attorney to provide legal expertise and guidance on matters related to affordable housing, nonprofit property development, and partnership agreements. This role is critical to ensuring MAP’s housing initiatives and collaborations align with NYC and New York State real estate laws, tax incentives, and compliance requirements. The ideal candidate is a mission‑driven legal professional with experience in real estate transactions, affordable housing, or nonprofit development.
Key Responsibilities
Provide legal guidance on real estate projects, contracts, and compliance
Review and draft documents related to leases, partnership agreements, and property acquisitions
Advise on NYC and NYS housing programs, incentives, and regulatory frameworks (LIHTC, Article XI, 420-a, HPD programs)
Support negotiations with developers, property managers, and partner organizations
Ensure legal compliance in real estate transactions and nonprofit housing initiatives
Collaborate with leadership on long‑term housing strategies for MAP’s programs
Provide legal risk assessments and recommend best practices for real estate projects
Requirements
Licensed attorney (NY Bar admission strongly preferred)
Proven experience in real estate law, affordable housing, or nonprofit legal advising
Strong knowledge of NYC and NYS housing regulations and incentives
Excellent contract drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills
Ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly to non‑legal stakeholders
Passion for mission‑driven work and supporting underserved communities
Preferred Skills
Experience working with nonprofits, housing developers, or community‑based organizations
Familiarity with tax exemption models, compliance for housing projects, and public‑private partnerships
Background in affordable housing finance and regulatory compliance
