The Maine Historical Society (MHS) is seeking a full‑time Marketing & Communications Manager to help drive efforts to expand MHS’s audience and impact, and to bring its recently developed Audience Engagement Plan to life. MHS is a forward‑looking non‑profit whose mission is to preserve and share Maine’s story. Founded in 1822 and based in Portland, ME, MHS works closely with communities and partners throughout the state. Marketing Strategy and Management [20%]
Creates and executes an annual Marketing & Communications Plan in concert with the Director of Audience Engagement, outlining goals, strategies, and metrics to dramatically expand MHS audiences and revenue, specifically over the next five years. Leads cross‑departmental efforts for marketing initiatives across MHS’s websites, content, e‑communication, and print collateral specifically Maine Connection, its programmatic companion What’s On, and CIRCA, the MHS newsletter. Compiles, evaluates, and reports on communication and marketing engagement strategies and effectiveness. In collaboration with the Digital Media & Communications Specialist, reviews surveys, web analytics, and social media engagement, and reports related metrics. Manages editorial calendar/workflow and delivery of consistent organizational messaging; works with the Graphic Designer and Digital Media & Communications Specialist to ensure outbound communications adhere to MHS’s brand guidelines and visual identity. Monitors the marketing and communications budget; tracks and processes invoices. Stays current on MHS exhibitions, collection initiatives, projects, programs, and strategic audience engagement efforts. Helps build an increasingly utilized repository of marketing photos and visual assets for future creative projects; occasionally assists with photography. Advises and supports membership and philanthropy communication strategy and best practices, and similar efforts across MHS departments. Other duties as assigned. Content Creation and Layout [45%]
Project manages MHS’s communication outlets, most notably Maine Connection, What’s On, and CIRCA, including drafting table of contents, cross‑departmental collaboration, maintaining schedules, and ensuring a high degree of excellence. Spearheads the development of new and ongoing content, drafting and laying out organizational print and digital newsletters in collaboration with the Graphic Designer, as well as multi‑purpose and topical content, brochures, and other marketing collateral. Promotes programs and events, exhibitions, tours, Wadsworth‑Longfellow House, Gallery, and Brown Library visitation, virtual offerings, and evolving customer experiences per the Audience Engagement and/or Business Plan. Other duties as assigned. MHS Website and Digital Content [15%]
Monitors the design, content, and voice for the institutional website; works closely with Digital Projects & Technology Manager and the Director of Audience Engagement to ensure website engagement and compelling, navigable, and up‑to‑date content. Works with MHS Content Team to identify, organize and feature stories, partners, and topics within rich, expanded digital content while adhering to historic collection and digital humanities best practices. Collaborates with Digital Media & Communications Specialist in developing a cohesive social media plan with regular, engaging posts, tags, targeted ads, etc. Monitors, analyzes, researches, and reports on activity/performance of email, advertising, and social media campaigns in collaboration with Digital Media & Communications Specialist, using data to inform impact and future activities. Other duties as assigned. Media Relations & Advertising [20%]
Fosters relationships with media to secure local, regional, and national press coverage of MHS's exhibitions, public programs, and achievements; drafts and disseminates press releases for major organizational news and events. Uses emerging advertising trends and vehicles to build MHS engagement and visitation; makes advertising decisions within a clearly defined budget and in collaboration with the Director of Audience Engagement. Maintains a strong MHS presence on tourism and travel planning websites, search engines, and third‑party influencer sites. Ensures MHS exhibits and events are featured in event calendars, listservs, and third‑party newsletters. Other duties as assigned. Direct Reports
Digital Media & Communications Specialist, and MHS Graphic Designer Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Four (4) years of professional experience in communications, marketing, or related field. Excellent storytelling, writing and editing skills; proven accuracy and attention to detail. Strong project management skills; ability to move from creative strategy to execution. Skilled at prioritizing and organizing work to meet deadlines in a busy environment. Ability to multi‑task, solve problems, and adapt in a changing environment. Strong communication and listening skills. Collaborative, flexible team player with a sense of fun; self‑motivated to work independently or as part of a team. Professional, energetic, and positive demeanor. Experienced working with staff, board members, volunteers, and the public; open to audience interests, needs, and feedback. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), e‑communications, website content management, and social media; eager to learn additional software. Experience synthesizing/analyzing/reporting metrics, and tracking trends. Ability to implement data‑based strategies in support of MHS’s mission. Available to work occasional evenings, weekends and travel by car as needed. Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of marketing and communication best practices and policies, including emerging technologies and multimedia vehicles. Working knowledge of Google Analytics, Mailchimp email marketing platform, Wagtail website CMS, and/or Adobe Photoshop. Knowledge or interest in Maine and Maine history. Work is performed in office, galleries and warehouse environments using basic office equipment such as a computer, printer, scanner, telephone, and copier. Work requires sitting, standing, and moving thorough MHS’s Congress Street and offsite campuses. It occasionally requires driving/travel to and from various MHS facilities and in the community. The position uses varied software packages, such as Microsoft and Adobe products, as well as bespoke and third‑party content management systems. Schedule & Location
This is a full‑time position scheduled at a minimum of 35 hours per week. Working hours are typically Monday‑Friday 9 AM‑5 PM, with some flexibility, but a set week‑to‑week schedule is preferred. On occasion, evening or weekend hours may be necessary to support MHS initiatives, events, or to meet project deadlines. This is an in‑person position. While limited remote work may be possible for tasks not tied to location‑specific activities, the position is typically and consistently on‑site during MHS business hours. Salary Range & Benefits
