Maintenance Machinist – Water Supply & Treatment Division – SFPUC (Temporary Provisional) San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is seeking a Maintenance Machinist for the Water Supply & Treatment Division. This short‑term provisional appointment is open to candidates who meet the qualifications outlined below.

Role Description Under general direction, the Maintenance Machinist performs preventative and emergency maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy and light equipment, related systems and components.

Essential Functions

Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools, stationary and portable manual machine tools, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools such as mills, lathes, drills, and saws.

Rebuilds, refinishes, modifies, and/or fabricates replacement parts for pumps, generators, cranes, parking meters, transit vehicles, fire alarm boxes, compressors, dredges, pipes, barges, ferry terminals, and other infrastructure components.

Maintains and repairs a range of instruments and mechanical equipment, including valves, castings, and various metal parts.

Diagnoses, installs, inspects, and tests machinery, parts, and equipment.

Reads and interprets schematic drawings, blueprints, and plans.

Prepares and maintains records and forms documenting work performed.

Dismantles and assembles light and heavy machines and equipment.

Manufactures/fabricates parts based on samples.

Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

How to Qualify

Completion of a recognized four‑year Machinist’s apprenticeship program and two years of verifiable full‑time experience equivalent to the job code 7332 Maintenance Machinist, OR

A combination of trade‑related training (certificate or military program) and six years of verifiable full‑time experience equivalent to the job code 7332 Maintenance Machinist.

Trade‑Related Training Note Trade‑related training includes programs such as machine tool technology programs. Experience limited to CNC Machinist or Machine Operator without manual maintenance experience will not be considered.

License and Certification Possession of a valid Class C California driver license is required. Completion of a CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards recognized Maintenance Machinist apprenticeship program is an acceptable substitute for the six years of combined work experience.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with inspection, removal, repair, rebuild, installation, and maintenance of positive displacement pumps (e.g., chemical feed pumps, water lifting pumps).

Experience with inspection, installation, machining, and removal of various valve and valve component types, including valve bodies, bonnets, discs, stems, and seats, for pipeline systems ranging from 2” to 108”.

Experience with valve actuators, including the safe removal and installation of actuator systems and components.
