Reporting to the Facilities Engineering Manager, as a Fire Protection Design Engineer you will be responsible for ensuring quality and timely deliveries of our Fire Protection system along with additional services to customers. The design engineer requires an in-depth understanding of current Fire Protection design standards and industry processes. As a licensed Fire Protection Engineer, you will be the primary contact for customer‑facing project work. This key position works closely with AHJ’s and clients to ensure projects are compliant and being completed as assigned. The Fire Protection Design Engineer is fully responsible and accountable for the final design content and document generation to support the Fire Protection system. The right candidate for this position can meet required deadlines and communicate effectively with customers and jurisdictional authorities.

Responsibilities

Attend project kick‑off meetings, facilitate design reviews, provide construction inspection (as necessary), and test/commission system deliveries

Plan, direct, and oversee fire protection engineering activities including project execution, testing, and recommend operational spares. This will span all three locations on the Deep Space Network, including overseas sites

Conduct fire protection engineering inspections, studies, design, and calculations to meet functional design requirements

Responsible for engineering and/or design function on specific projects, delivering effective and cost‑efficient alternatives and solutions for the project

Design, sustain, and provide analysis for new and existing private fire service mains, fire pumping and distribution system, fire suppression system, gas extinguishing system, fire alarm system, and prepare technical specifications

Meet with jurisdictional authorities and clients as needed to resolve compliance questions

Conduct fire protection engineering inspection, studies, design, and complex calculations

Create requisitions for purchase order approval and payment to vendors

Complete site surveys, identify code issues, and offer compliant solutions

Work with Cognizant Development Engineers (CDEs) and/or field personnel to ensure quality and timely delivery of our services

Maintain and update appropriate technical documentation

Provide remote technical support as necessary to perform field service and additional assistance as required

Analyze and recommend upgrade/expansion strategies

Provide code and standard references, as well as document research, reports, and interpretations for fire protection applications

Continuously review, and maintain a working knowledge of changing codes, standards, industry specifications and practices to ensure compliance

Perform interpretation and application of local, state, federal requirements, and regulations relative to all aspects of fire protection and life safety both local and at our overseas facilities

Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as OSHA, NASA, NFPA, NPR, NEC, etc. as well as following procedures as outlined in the Installation, Technical, Operations, and Safety Manuals)

Develop and deliver reports to clients on recommended updates to ensure compliance and/or operational functionality of fire monitoring, suppression, and/or life safety systems

Attend and participate in local and national professional organizations, such as SFPE and NFPA

Provide peer reviews of colleagues’ work product

Project management skills for managing internal projects as well as external client needs

Visit construction sites or frequent travel with overnight stay

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in engineering technology or sciences preferred or any other degree, specialized training, or experience, that makes the individual uniquely qualified to perform the job responsibilities, preferably Fire Protection Engineering

Minimum of 8‑10 years related work experience with Fire Protection detailed design. Highly preferred 10+ years’ experience

Fire Protection Engineering License by examination issued by any state in the United States

Experience in interpreting client request and apply design standards to work product

Possess certifications, training, and working knowledge of NFPA codes and standards

Ability to multi‑task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, show attention to detail, and demonstrate problem‑solving skills

Experienced in plan reviews

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including oral presentation skills

Prepare and present technical audits, reports, and exhibits

Managing day‑to‑day contacts with external clients while utilizing experience and technology to meet expectations

Experience in using AutoCAD, and a fire sprinkler program to design fire alarm, fire suppression, and life safety systems in AutoCAD

Visit complexes, including international travel or frequent travel with overnight stay

Certified Fire Protection Specialist, preferred

Working knowledge of Fire, Life Safety, Building Codes, and NFPA Standards

Possess certifications, training, and working knowledge of NFPA codes and standards including NFPA 13, 2001, 70, and 72

Desired Qualifications

Have a demonstrated track record of successful project management

Strong interpersonal, analytical and communication skills

Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously

Ability to work on a high‑functioning team

Flexible and able to think quickly to resolve design issues and make decisions

Ability to manage time and meet deadlines and budgets

Working competency with MS Office Suite & MS Project software

Security Clearance This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain a trusted background check and pass a National Criminal Information Check (NCIC). In order to obtain a clearance, you need to be a US Citizen and show proof of citizenship.
