Qualitative Research Strategist (Operations & Insights)

Longwell Partners is a full-service, pro-democracy communications firm based in Washington, DC. We specialize in high-profile political projects—including the Bulwark, Home of the Brave, and Republican Voters Against Trump—and we’re looking for a Qualitative Research Strategist to help strengthen and scale the operations and insights that power our focus group and opinion research work. Longwell Partners conducts a steady stream of qualitative research to inform political strategy, messaging, and content, and we support the Bulwark’s Focus Group Podcast. About the Role: As a Qualitative Research Strategist, you’ll join Longwell’s qualitative research team, which runs frequent online focus groups to capture how voters think, talk, and make decisions. You’ll work with our political and communications teams to refine and scale the systems that power our qualitative and broader opinion research—from study design and recruiting to synthesis and storytelling. This role is both strategic and operational. You’ll bring structure, rigor, and creativity to an already high-performing program, combining qualitative insight with an understanding of quantitative methods when appropriate to chart the next phase of growth. That can mean improving processes, developing new programming, or piloting emerging tools and technologies that make our insights sharper and faster. The right candidate won’t just bring research expertise but also strong political instincts and curiosity. We’re looking for someone who understands the dynamics of American politics: how voters form opinions, how messages land, and how campaigns communicate, and who can translate what they hear in our research into insights that drive persuasive, real-world strategy. If you enjoy listening to what makes ordinary people tick, we want to hear from you. There’s real runway here. The right candidate will strengthen our focus group operations today and help shape what opinion research looks like for Longwell Partners in the years ahead, including opportunities to grow the team, lead new projects, and extend our research impact through new partnerships or initiatives. Your Responsibilities: Plan and design qualitative studies, including objectives, audiences, screeners, quotas, and discussion guides. Coordinate recruiting partners and internal logistics to keep a consistent cadence of focus groups on time and on budget. Observe live groups and lead rapid debriefs; translate raw conversation into clear findings, implications, and next steps. Synthesize across sessions and markets; produce concise readouts, highlight reels, and actionable recommendations. Collaborate with political, communications and creative teams so that insights directly inform messaging, content, and media plans. Evaluate and integrate modern analysis tools that streamline coding, theming, and retrieval of past learnings. What We’re Looking For: 2+ years of experience in qualitative or public-opinion research, including some hands-on exposure to focus groups. (If your experience doesn’t match up perfectly but you think you may be a fit, we encourage you to apply.) Demonstrated ability to structure studies, write effective screeners and guides, and deliver clear, data-informed insights. Deep familiarity with American politics, media, and elections; you track the conversation and anticipate where it’s headed. Strength in synthesis and storytelling; you can move from transcripts to patterns to persuasive recommendations, and separate signal from noise. Operational reliability under deadline; you manage moving parts, vendors, and stakeholders without dropping the thread. Comfort using modern tools for transcripts, coding, and analysis. Ability to be in the office (downtown DC) five days a week. This is not a remote or hybrid opportunity. Preferred Qualifications: Experience moderating focus groups or collaborating with and mentoring moderators. Experience with quantitative or mixed-method opinion research (polls/surveys) and an understanding of how to pair qual with quant. Familiarity with data tools or basic coding environments (such as R, Python, or SQL) for analysis or visualization. Familiarity with packaging insights for external clients, editors, or audio/video producers. Why Join Us? Competitive salary, commensurate with experience. 401(k) matching program. 100% covered medical insurance. Metro-accessible, downtown DC location. Opportunities to learn, innovate, and advance within a mission-driven, high-performance team that values initiative, creativity, and collaboration. How to Apply: Please send your resume and a brief cover letter to jobs@longwellpartners.com. In your cover letter, please tell us why you’re interested in Longwell Partners and how your experience makes you a strong fit for this role.
