Base pay range $260,000.00/yr - $315,000.00/yr

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval and award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

Degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME, AOA, or other residency with five years of verified U.S. practice).

Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.

Residents in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).

PRPs must hold a full license (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they perform limited duties under supervision.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Additional requirement: Must be board certified.

Physical requirements: Ability to perform all activities of the position without restriction, including standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, turning, and stairs.

Duties

This is an open continuous announcement.

All qualified applicants will be referred to the hiring manager on a weekly basis.

Psychiatrists will provide health care services to veteran patients enrolled at the Fayetteville VA Coastal Healthcare System.

Clinical services are generally needed from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (excluding federal holidays and leave), except when providing on‑call coverage.

Duties include initial psychiatric evaluation, medication management clinics, referrals to other specialists or subspecialties, and appropriate treatment and management of general psychiatric problems on a predominantly outpatient basis.

Activities include safety assessment, treatment planning, medication management, ordering laboratory tests, procedures (e.g., EKG), imaging, and disposition of patients.

Obtain appropriate consultation from specialists/ancillary services and communicate pertinent medical information to other health care providers and patients.

Enter all diagnostic and treatment information into the computer patient record system (CPRS) on the day of the visit.

Documentation must satisfy Department of Veterans Affairs and local VAMC policies and procedures and meet external accreditation agency requirements.

Must possess computer skills to access CPRS; orientation will be provided by the VAMC.

Prescribe medications according to the established drug formulary and applicable federal and state regulations and clinical guidelines.

Administer the necessary medical licenses and maintain board certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

Provide psychiatric consultation to other services at the VAMC and associated community clinics when required.

Additional duties may be assigned by the Assistant Chief of Psychiatry, Chief of Psychiatry, or Chief of the Behavioral Health Service Line.

Salary and Benefits Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases. Paid time off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays and up to 5 paid days for CME). Work schedule: regular tour of duty 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday‑Friday; rotational on‑call for weekday evenings, nights, weekends and federal holidays.
