Pay Range Base pay range: $300,000.00/yr - $400,000.00/yr

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy

Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine

Degree obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed

Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification

PRPs: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis. PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged. The scope of practice allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

Proficiency in spoken and written English

Preferred Experience: Board‑certified Gastroenterology physician with advanced clinical experience and demonstrated administrative and leadership skills

Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction – standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, turning, and going up and down flights of stairs.

Location: VA – VHA – Mid‑Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6) – Fayetteville VA Medical Center (VAMC) – Chief of Staff – Medicine Service

The successful candidate will serve as the Section Chief for Gastroenterology Section

Ensure quality and timeliness of services, customer satisfaction, and compliance with standards of accrediting bodies such as the Joint Commission and the Inspector General’s Combined Assessment Program

Ensure appropriate use of resources and maintain state‑of‑the‑art standards of care

Collaborate with other services as appropriate

Accountable to the Chief of the Medicine Service for assurance of effective delivery of care in gastroenterology while meeting compliance standards

Provide expert consultation and treatment to patients in inpatient and outpatient settings, including GI clinics, GI procedures, and inpatient medical, surgical, and critical care services

Provide feedback and patient education; demonstrate excellence and meet or exceed compliance standards

Evaluate, diagnose, consult, and order appropriate diagnostic studies and treatments for all GI patients assigned under their care

Provide consultative evaluations for other services (general medical wards, surgical wards, emergency department) and perform administrative functions as assigned by the Chief of the Medicine Service

Provide compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient care to promote health and treat critical illnesses

Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills for professional relationships with patients, families, and healthcare team

Adhere to stated policies and provide timely documentation of clinical notes (Consult H&Ps, clinic notes, procedure notes)

Coordinate and communicate treatment plans with inpatient and outpatient healthcare providers requesting consultative services

Administrative duties: Ensure operations and compliance with Veterans Health Administration guidelines for Gastroenterology Section of Medical Service

Manage schedules of employees, ensure up‑to‑date call schedule coverage and posting, hold monthly section meetings, and allocate resources for adequate coverage of clinical programs

Attend required staff meetings, communicate up and down the chain of command, prepare heads‑up and issue briefs related to adverse patient outcomes

Other duties as assigned
