Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office following review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship; non-citizens only if no qualified citizens can be recruited per VA Policy.
Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved VA school.
Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
Completed residency training approved by VA in an accredited core specialty leading to board certification. (Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA programs or other residencies with verified U.S. practice.)
Fully licensed physicians may be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs) on an intermittent or fee basis, subject to supervisory scope.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Must be board certified.
Preferred experience: Ophthalmology background and supervisory experience.
Physical requirements: competent to perform all activities of the position without restriction, including standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, turning, and stair navigation.

Duties
This is an open continuous announcement; qualified applicants are referred weekly to the hiring manager.
Section Chief of Ophthalmology is a medical doctor with advanced training in diagnosing and treating disorders of the eye, including glaucoma, cataracts, vision problems, and eye injuries. Extensive training allows linking eye problems to other disorders such as brain tumors, diabetes, or multiple sclerosis.
Leads the Ophthalmology Section of the Surgery Service under the overall management of the Section Chief.
Manages an interdisciplinary staff (physicians, physician extenders, technicians, administrative and clerical staff) to provide comprehensive surgical/clinical services within established policies.
Administrative duties: attend staff meetings, communicate up and down the chain of command, prepare briefs on adverse patient outcomes, and support head‑up and issue briefs as directed.
Clinical management: maintain open encounter and consult documentation, monitor clinic productivity, manage quality and patient safety oversight, and implement process improvements.
Collaborates with Surgical Services Administration, GPM team, and staff to improve access and clinical metrics.
Provides patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective, with continuous professional development, ethical practice, and commitment to diversity and quality improvement.
Operates under the direct supervision of the Chief of Surgery and is subject to performance appraisal by the Chief of Surgery.
Provides consult and call coverage at the VA Hospital on Ramsey.
