Summary

Plans, organizes, and directs the academic, clinical, and administrative elements of the Nursing School. Participates in recruiting and selection of faculty and staff.

Distinguishing Career Features

The Associate Dean for the Nursing School is an academic management position that administers the programs and courses offered culminating in certificates, degrees, and pathways to licensure. These programs are supported with clinical simulations and practicum. The Associate Dean complies with the guidelines established by the Board of Registered Nursing and the national League of Nursing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions, and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following duties, as assigned:

Plans, organizes, and directs nursing education and related disciplines. Ensures compliance with BRN, NLN, and ACEN CSHA; participates in policies and procedures related to approval and/or accreditation of healthcare programs.

Oversees recruitment, selection, admission, and academic progression of students in the program. Monitors progression and reviews student records for advancement, e.g., LVN to RN.

Establishes standards for academic and clinical performance for permanent and adjunct faculty. Ensures faculty licensure and clinical credentials.

Facilitates development of revised and new curriculum and program elements to stay current with state requirements for nursing practice.

Directs and participates in class schedules, teaching assignments; supervises and evaluates staff; monitors faculty credentials and teaching load.

Initiates, maintains, and renews articulation agreements with universities; serves as liaison between the college and health care industry for planning and coordinating clinical facility use agreements.

Develops, assembles, and recommends annual budgets; controls and authorizes expenditures within approved budgets.

Provides leadership for program review, process improvement, and assessment of student progress and learning outcomes; prepares narrative and statistical reports and records related to Nursing and healthcare practice and program accreditation.

Conducts classroom lectures and discussions on nursing theory, practicum, and simulations.

Initiates and participates in grant proposals; administers grant awards.

Collaborates with faculty within and outside of Nursing to advance the program and blend other allied health education and training.

Attends continuing education and conferences to maintain licensure and bring innovation to the Nursing Program.

Performs other duties as assigned to support overall objectives of the position.

Advocates for the needs of the division and communicates concerns to the Executive Dean and/or administration.

Participates in recruiting, interviewing, and selecting nursing faculty and staff.

Directs, supervises, and oversees routine operations and delivery of instruction for the department.

Coordinates, develops, maintains, and implements program, District, and state policies, rules, and regulations related to the nursing program.

Serves on department and campus committees; represents the College on boards and committees at local, state, and national levels to promote nursing instructional programs.

Oversees orientation and tenure review processes for new and tenured faculty.

Performs other related duties as assigned to support the position’s objective.

Adheres to District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 - Code of Professional Ethics.

Qualifications and Physical Demands Knowledge and Skills

The position requires specialized professional knowledge of nursing theory, practice, principles, procedures, methods, and protocols.

Requires advanced knowledge of laws, codes, regulations, and practices related to nursing including BRN, NLN, and requirements.

Requires working knowledge of program leadership, supervision, and staff development.

Requires in-depth knowledge of state laws and regulations related to licensure, certification, and accreditation.

Requires knowledge of computer-aided applications for documenting patient activity and statistics.

Requires well-developed human relations skills to lead a team, conduct lectures, and work with faculty and nursing students; in-service clinical training.

Requires sufficient math skills for statistical tests and advanced writing skills for diagnostic reports.

Abilities

Ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.

Ability to carry out objectives and perform advanced professional nursing skills with appropriate authority.

Ability to recommend innovative changes and translate trends into curriculum and practicum.

Ability to prepare professional narrative and statistical reports.

Ability to set up, organize, lead, and perform health care services in a clinic or acute care setting.

Ability to demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity of staff and students.

Ability to maintain all necessary licenses.

Physical Abilities

Licenses and Certificates May require a valid driver license. Must hold a current and active California Registered Nurse license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing.

Working Conditions Work is performed indoors with minimal safety considerations.

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, DEIA The minimum qualifications for a health services professional responsible for developing and directing student health services shall be a valid, current California RN license, and either:

A Master’s degree in nursing and a California Public Health Nurse certificate; or

A bachelor’s degree in nursing, a California Public Health Nurse certificate, and a master’s degree in health education, sociology, psychology, counseling, health care administration, public health, or community health.

Two years of teaching experience in a pre- or post-licensure RN program; one year as an administrator with demonstrated administrative responsibilities; and one year of direct patient care as an RN, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

AND demonstrated responsiveness to and understanding of diversity within the community college student population, including equity-minded practice.

Conditions of Employment This is a contract, full-time, 12-month per year, Educational Administrator position. Normal hours: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Flexible schedule and weekends may be necessary to address duties and student needs.

Pay Philosophy Coast Community College District provides a fair and equitable total compensation program. New employees are typically placed at the first step of the salary grade; annual salary movements occur on July 1. (Salary Range DG-10)
