Provides technical and instructional assistance to students involved in cosmetology and esthetics curriculum, including customer service-oriented classroom and laboratory settings. Oversees custody, care, preparation and dispensing of products and equipment in accordance with governing boards and safety standards. Distinguishing Career Features

The Cosmetology Dispensary Technician is part of an instruction support career ladder. The position requires qualifications for dispensing beauty products with chemical mixing and coloring. Advancement potential exists to Lab Associate based on need and the ability to support the curriculum with demonstrations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties may vary; incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following: Coordinate, prepare, and dispense equipment, chemicals, and products for class instruction; may blend chemicals to customer needs. Ensure equipment and supplies are operational, cleaned and sanitized in the cosmetology and esthetician program. Provide students with assistance and training in operation of equipment and mixing of solutions and chemicals. Order supplies; maintain inventory and accounting for supplies and equipment on hand. Assist the department in implementing State Board rules and health and safety regulations, in compliance with State Board of Cosmetology and OSHA. Maintain control and documentation of hazardous chemicals; arrange disposal of bio-hazard materials. Perform general clerical support to the Cosmetology program; support faculty, prepare handouts, maintain inventory records and related files. Maintain knowledge of trends and requirements within the cosmetology field as required by licensing agencies. Front desk duties: answer phones, confirm appointments, book clients, check in/out, rebook appointments; process payments and deposits. Book tours for students; respond to questions about Esthetician Program; gather data and prepare reports on retention and sales. Perform other related duties as assigned to support the position’s objectives. Adhere to all District policies and procedures including professional ethics. Knowledge and Skills

Working knowledge of concepts, learning strategies, and activities in Cosmetology and Esthetics. Knowledge of current trends in grooming and fashion. Working knowledge of chemical mixtures and combinations. Working knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment, testing, experiments, and simulations. Mathematical skills to calculate quantities and portions. English language skills to read, analyze, and apply procedural manuals. Human relations skills to facilitate learning with small groups and convey technical concepts to students. Abilities

Ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position. Ability to provide instructional assistance and support within Cosmetology. Ability to perform routine record keeping and report writing. Ability to communicate effectively with students, instructors, and clients. Ability to coordinate activities of work-study students. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, peers, and students to support positive student engagement. Physical Abilities

Associate’s degree in Cosmetology and one year of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required qualifications. AND Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diversity within the community college student population, including equity-minded practices. Licenses and Certificates

May require a valid driver license. Requires valid Cosmetology license issued by the state of California. Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors with safety considerations for chemical handling. This is an in-house only, part-time 19 hours per week, 12-month per year classified position. Continuation is grant funded contingent on funds. Schedule options: two options described by department, with occasional evening or weekend hours as needed.
