A Brief Overview The SVP, Corporate Controller, is the top executive at Stanford Health Care responsible for the system-wide and subsidiary financial reporting cycle, month‑end closing, regulatory financial compliance, tax matters, and other financial functions. The Corporate Controller is a key member of the Stanford Health Care leadership team and reports to the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. The Corporate Controller collaborates closely with all members of the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams. The Corporate Controller is one of the primary executives responsible for reporting to the Board of Directors, Audit, Compliance and Enterprise Risk Committee, and Finance & Investment Committee. Additionally, the Corporate Controller is the primary point of contact and lead executive representing management interfacing with external auditing firms.

What You Will Do

Direct the development of accounting and financial policies and procedures, oversee the establishment, development and monitoring of all accounting and financial policies for SHC, manage financial risks and develop appropriate controls and tools, oversee cash handling policies to ensure effective internal controls, support financing activities including tax‑exempt bond issuance and debt compliance, review and approve bond compliance reports, and manage capital asset policies to monitor compliance. Support the CFO in managing the financial and operating performance of SHC to improve bond rating.

Manage all financial processes and systems related to Lawson GL, A/P, Payroll, Capital Projects, Fixed Assets, Restricted funds, and Gifts—including daily operational guidance, system upgrades and maintenance, procurement of new systems, automation opportunities, and accounting operations to meet standards.

Oversee accounting operations and financial reporting, including general accounting, external reporting, funds accounting, accounts payable, inter‑entity matters between SHC and subsidiaries, investment and gift accounting, reserve management, pension plan liability reporting, and monthly/quarterly/annual financial closings. Review and approve consolidated financial statements and ensure timely management reports in Lawson.

Implement an effective training program for all Lawson GL users, ensure application security, internal controls, and develop Lawson accounting reports such as budget variance reports. Continually improve core operations in inventory management, supply chain processing, billing, reporting cycle, and month‑end close.

Oversee asset tracking, depreciation, final project completion and capitalization, coordinate with CIO and other VPs to ensure proper accounting controls, provide training on capitalization policies, and safeguard company assets.

Manage relationships with external auditors for financial statement audits, pension audits, and regulatory audits including tax audits and cost report audits, ensuring timely completion of audits and adherence to deadlines.

Oversee payroll operations, payroll tax reporting, and pension reporting for SHC; establish payroll policies, design controls for accuracy, ensure timely employee payments, manage pension audits, and review pension plan financial statements.

Manage revenue and reimbursement functions of the hospital and clinics, oversee reporting for revenue, contractual allowances and bad debts, ensure compliance with Medicare, Medi‑Cal, OSHPD and other filings, collaborate with related executives to optimize revenue, support reporting of graduate medical education FTE counts, and analyze regulatory changes.

Provide assistance to financial planning in budgeting, capital planning and financial modeling; consult on operating expenses for pension and retiree medical plans; support cash flow forecasting, financial modeling, and implement financial policies.

Oversee all federal, state, and local tax reporting and filings, including IRS, state board of equalization, OSHPD, and other agencies. Provide tax consultation, manage tax audits, review and approve tax returns, and oversee executive compensation tax issues.

Education Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or related field

Experience Qualifications

Experience in accounting and financial reporting acquired over 20 years of progressively responsible leadership positions within an integrated not‑for‑profit healthcare system or consultative organization, with annual revenues in excess of $8 billion.

Seasoned professional with experience in all aspects of healthcare accounting, financial reporting, and financial management, including board, finance committee, and senior staff leadership.

Demonstrated history of identifying root causes of problems and considering a range of options before deciding on a course of action.

Demonstrated experience in building teams and talent, and effectively managing and communicating change.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting for not‑for‑profit healthcare.

Knowledge of accounting, healthcare reimbursement, financial forecasting, operations analysis, managed care contracting, capitation management, general finance, and all other aspects of healthcare financial management.

Knowledge of major industry trends and issues.

Ability to translate healthcare trends and regulatory laws into actionable plans.

Strategic thinking and ability to create collaboration among diverse groups.

Advanced leadership skills and business acumen.

Excellent problem‑identification, analysis, evaluation and resolution skills; ability to translate research, data, and statistics into lay terms and clear presentations.

Creative problem‑identification, conceptualization, and contingency thinking skills.

Strong analytical and interpersonal, negotiation and persuasion skills.

Effective oral and written communication and presentation skills at the Board level.

Strong competency in financial management, including quantitative and modeling skills.

Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office and financial and statistical analysis tools.

Licenses and Certifications

CPA – Certified Public Accountant preferred.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $147.00 – $194.92 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
