Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
Approved residencies are: (1) ACGME accredited; (2) AOA accredited; or (3) other residencies with US practice verification
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
PRPs serve under supervision and have a scope of practice that allows certain restricted duties
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Board Certified or Board Eligible (reference: https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/)
Physical Requirements: Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position - with or without reasonable accommodation - without hazard to themselves or others
Vision, hearing, or speech may be required depending on the specific duties; impairments may be compensated with mechanical aids
Duties
Administer anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures
Provide continuous and vigilant monitoring of the patient's physical response to the anesthetic – sedatives, analgesics, and related anesthetic agents
Maintain excellence in endotracheal intubation and extubation – airway management – and be skilled in the usage of all various airway adjuncts
Make a reasonable anesthetic plan for patients with severe comorbidities
Perform appropriately credentialed techniques of the anesthetic plan such as insertion of intravenous lines, arterial lines, central lines, other invasive monitoring catheters, regional anesthesia, and TEE
Interpret arterial blood gases, EKG, and relevant lab results; perform pre‑anesthetic evaluation
Manage the anesthesia process to include induction, maintenance, and emergence from general, regional, monitored, and satellite anesthesia cases
Manage postoperative pain needs for any anesthetized patient
Recognize abnormal patient responses and initiate corrective measures
Determine need for additional laboratory tests
Provide resuscitative care as necessary
Evaluate and manage the patient in the immediate postoperative period
Administer IV fluids relative to the patient's medical history and surgical procedure
Administer blood products and monitor for adverse responses; appropriately document patient status in the anesthesia record
Teach and evaluate residents and students; assume responsibility and be accountable for controlled substances per policy and guidelines
Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday – 7:00 am–3:30 pm with on‑call on some weekdays and weekends

Recruitment Incentive (Sign‑on Bonus): up to $200 000, eligibility subject to VHA policy
