CYP Assistant

Navy Region Northwest Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR) . The role supports the Child and Youth Program (CYP) by caring for children and youth, ensuring their safety, engagement, and development.

Summary The CYP Assistant works directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. Responsibilities include helping children develop social skills such as making friends and conflict resolution; promoting healthy choices in nutrition and recreation; building self‑help and school readiness skills; and exploring the surrounding environment.

Duties

Develop, schedule, and implement activity plans and curriculum that meet the individual needs of children and youth at all developmental levels.

Plan and facilitate indoor and outdoor activities, maintaining equipment, supplies, and display areas.

Model developmental practice and manage classroom or activity areas to promote safety and learning.

Supervise children and youth during daily schedules, field trips, and special events, ensuring compliance with DoD, NAF, and local policies.

Maintain communication with parents and employees, providing daily feedback and participating in conferences.

Observe participants for signs of health or safety concerns, and report as required (e.g., to Family Advocacy or Child Protective Services).

Assist with program compliance, accreditation, and reporting of program participation data.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Complete required training certificates and maintain federal, state, or national certifications relevant to DoD child and youth programs.

Pass all background and security checks, including a Tier 1 child‑care check and State Criminal History Repository check.

Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing; a positive result for marijuana or any other drug results in removal from the position.

Pass a pre‑employment physical, provide evidence of immunization, and be free of communicable diseases.

Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at time of application.

Possess a REAL ID‑compliant driver’s license or another acceptable identification if requested.

Good knowledge of child and youth development principles is required; experience is preferred.

Qualifications Applicants should demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the following levels.

Entry Level (CY‑1702‑01)

Effective written and oral communication in English.

Followable verbal and written instructions.

Complete DoN training within timeframe.

Promote effective relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.

Collaborate cooperatively as a team member.

Intermediate Level (CY‑1702‑01)

Knowledge of child and youth development principles.

Implement developmentally appropriate practices.

Plan and organize activities.

Interpret a curriculum or activity plan.

Six (6) months of experience working with children or youth.

Target Level (CY‑1702‑02)

Advanced knowledge of child and youth development principles.

Provide high‑quality direct care and education in groups or individually.

One (1) year of experience with children or youth.

Advanced communication and team collaboration skills.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Approved candidates may hold a college degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Youth Recreation, Physical Education, Elementary Education, or a related field.

Valid Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School‑Age (MSA) credential is a plus.

Conditions of Employment & Background Checks

Full compliance with DoDI 1402.05 and related DoD policies, including automatic disqualification for certain convictions.

Completion of all background checks for child care positions, including fingerprint checks, IRC, and SARP records.

Automatic disqualification for sexual offenses, child‑victim offenses, felony drug offenses, and negligence related to child safety.
