Overview

The Texas General Land Office is seeking a Natural Resource Specialist III (Natural Resource Specialist) within the Leasing Operations Division of the agency. The Natural Resource Specialist performs highly complex (senior-level) natural resources work. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Work may involve conservation, management, protection, preservation, or utilization of state natural resources. Our Mission:

The agency does so by preserving our history, maximizing state revenue through innovative administration, and through the prudent stewardship of state lands and natural resources. Responsibilities

Wildlife Specialist Coordinate and/or perform data collection, research, analysis, evaluations, inspections, or surveys, and evaluate impact to land, wildlife and livestock management. Coordinate inspections, surveys, assessments, and studies; evaluate results with regard to their impact on the state’s natural resources; prepare recommendations regarding findings; and conduct follow-up inspections as required. Develop wildlife and grazing management strategies and conducts follow-up inspections as necessary to ensure implementation. Prepare reports and technical documentation — compile and produce inspection reports, technical papers and publications based on collected data and research findings. Research, prepare, review, and edit technical papers, publications, and reports. Assist with preparation of wildlife and grazing management plans used in implementing a natural resource management program. Range Specialist Coordinate and/or perform data collection, research, analysis, evaluations, inspections, or surveys, and evaluate impact to land, wildlife and all other state natural resources. Prepare recommendations regarding findings of inspections and surveys; conduct follow-up inspections as required. Develop range management strategies and conducts follow-up inspections as necessary to ensure implementation. Coordinate and/or perform the activities of a natural resources program, including range and wildlife management and development of methods for improved management and technical techniques. Compile and produce inspection reports, technical papers and publications based on collected data and research findings. Research, prepare, review, and edit technical papers, publications, and reports. Assist with preparation of operational manuals and implementation of a natural resources program. Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or experience in wildlife and range management principles, livestock husbandry practices, and state natural resource conservation and protection. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in upland wildlife and upland animal sciences or a closely-related field. Experience and education may be substituted for one another. Physical Requirements

This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work; however, mobility is routinely required to carry out some duties. This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/customer contact and communication. It requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions. Ability to read printed materials and computer screens. The individual must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required. Preferred Qualifications

BS Degree in Wildlife, Range, Animal Science or other closely-related natural science area. Basic experience with wildlife range, and/or livestock management is preferred. Other helpful areas of knowledge and/or experience include agronomy, wildlife/animal nutrition and water quality. Compensation and Benefits
