LOCATION OF POSITION Be advised this reposting is for Baltimore and Jessup region only.
Main Purpose of Job To enhance the security of State Correctional Facilities by operating a specialized, trained K-9 dog work team. Teams shall provide a psychological and physical presence, detect contraband, and controlled dangerous substances.
Position Duties Perform routine patrol or detection duties of DPSCS and allied agencies. Duties include security checks, perimeter patrol, monitoring inmate movement, standby security, drug and contraband detection, interdiction checkpoints, vehicle/person/area and housing unit searches, report writing, stopping and investigating suspicious persons or trespassers on institutional property. Conduct public education and demonstrations. Participate in training and re‑qualification activities. Ensure the health, maintenance, and welfare of assigned dogs, and maintain K‑9 training standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.
Experience: Three years of experience as a Correctional Officer involving the custody and security of adult inmates.
Additional Requirements
The above educational requirement is set by the Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8‑209.
Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for one year of the required experience provided that a minimum of 15 credit hours are in the field of criminal justice or related social sciences.
Candidates may substitute equivalent State experience in other classifications within the correctional field which involve daily contact with and custody of inmates for the required experience. Qualifying experience must be in a classification where the salary is comparable to that of Correctional Officer II.
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications or correctional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work equivalent to a Correctional Officer II on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
License, Registration, and Certification
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
Employees in this classification may be required to operate buses for the transportation of inmates. Employees assigned such duties will be required to acquire a Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brakes endorsements valid in the State of Maryland.

Employees in this classification hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 shall successfully complete the Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
Employees in this classification are subject to call‑in 24 hours a day and must provide a telephone number where they can be reached.
Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
