The Medical Librarian supports the information needs of physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, residents, researchers, students, hospital leadership, and others by providing highly specialized professional library services. This position provides general research assistance, expert searching, library resource training, document delivery services, and day-to-day oversight of a regional library. This is an on-site position. The Medical Librarian works under the direction of the System Director, Libraries & Archives.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
Responding to information and reference requests from physicians, researchers, clinical service providers, hospital leadership, and other team members.
Researching complex customer inquiries. Requires proficiency with searching PubMed/Medline and other biomedical databases such as CINAHL and Embase. Requires familiarity with the MeSH vocabulary.
Consulting with clinicians and research teams conducting systematic reviews. Has proficient knowledge of the latest systematic review guidelines and maintains the ability to plan and execute appropriate search strategies. Has a basic understanding of research methodologies.
Using document services and interlibrary loan functions to provide requested materials to users. Implements appropriate systems to support the provision of interlibrary loan functions.
Handling the day-to-day operations of a regional campus library under minimal supervision. This may include providing reference services, document services, and patron services such as circulation and electronic resource support.
Maintaining the library’s print resources in coordination with system collection development policies; includes selection and cataloging of materials.
Providing library instruction and outreach in-person and online.
Developing relationships with hospital departments and stakeholders; working collaboratively on projects when required.
Promoting and marketing library services and resources through excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with citation management software (Endnote).
Ability to create and maintain research guides and utilize other Springshare tools.
Ability to work both independently and effectively within teams.
Performing other related duties as assigned.
Education / Experience Required
Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA‑accredited program or equivalent degree.
Certification with the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) is required within one year of employment.
Minimum of two years of professional (post‑Masters) library experience, or one‑year professional (post‑Masters) library experience in a medical or an academic library setting.
Solid technology background, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Strong interpersonal, teamwork, communication, and customer‑service skills.
Enthusiasm to explore and implement innovative technologies and trends in medical librarianship to enhance library services.
