Advanced Practice Professional – Ob/GYN, Wheeling, WV
The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) is an individual with clinical and medical skills in obstetrics and gynecology. The APP completes comprehensive patient health evaluations—including biological, social, and psychological assessments—considering the patient’s comorbid conditions and overall disposition in collaboration with the appropriate clinical/faculty team. The APP assesses and coordinates the educational and psychosocial needs of patients and caretakers. The APP develops and reviews the plan of care with other members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care, and coordinates discharge planning or follow‑up (as applicable). The APP participates in the education of residents and medical/nursing students and performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Minimum Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner
Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with a master’s degree in Nursing.
National certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
American Heart Association BLS certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
Preferred Qualifications (Nurse Practitioner)
WHNP or FNP certification preferred.
For First Assist in peri‑operative services: completion of an ANOR‑approved CNOR Certificate program and passing grade on CNOR certification exam (as required by the department).
Experience (Nurse Practitioner)
Eligible and talented new graduates will be considered.
Minimum Qualifications for Physician Assistant
Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant required.
Graduate of an ARC‑PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program required.
Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.
Must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant in West Virginia.
American Heart Association BLS certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training at the discretion of the department.
Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant preferred.
Preferred Qualifications (Physician Assistant)
Experience in obstetrics/gynecology.
Core Duties and Responsibilities The following are general duties for this position; other tasks may be assigned.
Manages comprehensive and individualized care for obstetrics/gynecology patients and their families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Completes daily rounds and consults with clinic and hospital staff as necessary.
Provides urgent and chronic management of OB/GYN patients in ambulatory settings.
Completes integrated assessments and documents findings in the medical record.
Orders additional tests or consults in collaboration with faculty or according to established clinical guidelines.
Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following scope of practice guidelines.
Facilitates patient discharge and/or follow‑up by coordinating appropriate services and tests.
Performs procedures in accordance with established protocols.
Develops individualized care plans including teaching and disposition planning.
Participates in physician rounds as applicable.
Identifies unstable or complex patients and facilitates appropriate intervention.
Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
Coordinates follow‑up procedures and tests in ambulatory settings.
Assists in collecting outcome measures.
Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision‑making.
Utilizes equipment safely.
Bases decisions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
Applies teaching/learning theory to educate staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
Promotes a learning environment responsive to patients’ preferences and readiness.
Evaluates effectiveness of teaching and collaborates with staff to complete education plans.
Updates knowledge throughout the year.
Meets identified clinical competencies.
Serves as a resource for staff caring for OB/GYN patients.
Provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel.
Mentors nursing personnel at all levels.
Participates in community outreach and education as appropriate.
Communicates effectively across all levels to coordinate patient care.
Documents plans, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in medical records.
Collaborates with leaders to achieve patient outcome‑based improvements.
Leads development and implementation of practice changes that improve outcomes.
Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems.
Initiates interdisciplinary approaches to patient care and program development.
Promotes innovation in delivery of OB/GYN care throughout inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Participates in committees and task forces.
Records hours and submits billing reports as appropriate.
Participates in the WVUH/UHA Performance Improvement Plan.
Applies information from performance improvement activities to improve care.
Reviews and interprets OB/GYN data to recommend changes.
Participates in clinical trials and research studies.
Assists faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
Physical Requirements
Heavy/Hard work: lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40+ pounds.
Working Environment
