POSITION OVERVIEW:
At the Texas Education Agency’s Office of Governance (OG), we are driven by a powerful mission: to proactively support school systems, keep students safe, and uphold Texas education law with integrity, objectivity, and excellence. Our core workstreams—Field Support and Compliance & Investigations—focus on strengthening governance, fostering a culture of accountability, and promoting continuous improvement across Texas schools. By working closely with school systems and agency teams, we help ensure every Texas public school student has access to a safe, high-quality education.
The Division of Governance Interventions is a high-impact, mission-driven team committed to strengthening leadership and improving outcomes in local education agencies (LEAs)—including school districts and charter schools—across Texas. We partner with school boards and administrators to elevate governance practices, enhance financial stewardship, and ensure alignment with state education standards. Through strategic guidance, responsive support, and technical assistance, we help LEAs build systems that foster student success and community trust.
In cases where significant challenges arise, such as persistent noncompliance or findings from a special investigation, the commissioner of education may initiate formal interventions. These can include appointing a monitor, conservator, or board of managers, or issuing a corrective action plan. Our division leads the implementation and oversight of these interventions, working collaboratively with LEA leadership to restore effective governance and drive sustainable improvement.
The intervention coordination and implementation specialist role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of school governance in Texas. Reporting directly to the division director, you will lead the strategic rollout of commissioner-appointed interventions, with a particular focus on Boards of Managers. The position will be responsible for developing and managing project plans, coordinating across agency divisions, and ensuring smooth execution of each intervention. Additionally, you will also monitor corrective action plans issued to LEAs, helping ensure progress and accountability. This position offers considerable autonomy to innovate and lead, under minimal supervision with broad latitude for independent judgment.
Flexible work location within the state of Texas may be considered for qualified candidates.
Please note that a resume and short answer responses are required attachments for applying to this position. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Additionally, applicants who are strongly being considered for employment must submit to a national criminal history background check.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Intervention Coordination: effectively manage the coordination of commissioner-appointed board of managers by developing detailed project plans, facilitating planning meetings, managing cross-agency collaboration, and overseeing logistics to ensure smooth implementation
Corrective Action Plan Monitoring: monitor corrective action plans issued by units within the Office of Governance following compliance reviews and investigations; draft monthly status reports to assess progress and support LEAs meeting expectations
Process Improvement: collaborate with colleagues and the division director to refine policies and procedures that advance the division’s goals; partner with other agency teams to document and share effective practices, tools, and resources
Division Support: support the division director and the Governance Interventions team with monthly reporting, training coordination, and quarterly performance reviews
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university
Experience:
At least four [4] years of experience in compliance monitoring, project management, and/or district administration.
Substitutions:
An advanced degree may substitute for two years of required experience.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Share the belief that all Texas students can achieve at high levels and are able to succeed in college, career, or the military.
Experience prioritizing and completing multiple and competing projects or priorities simultaneously.
Ability to coordinate and facilitate meetings effectively to achieve project outcomes and support cross divisional coordination.
Working knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations including but not limited to the Texas Education Code, Texas Administrative Code, and FERPA, preferred.
Effective communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to write reports and actively listen to acquire key facts while maintaining confidentiality; gather and analyze large amounts of data from multiple sources (including individuals and electronic records) and present the information in an organized manner under short timelines.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to take appropriate actions in difficult situations.
