Safeway is looking for a Grocery Manager to direct and supervise the Grocery Department, ensuring high-quality customer service, efficient operations, and strong financial results.

PURPOSE Exemplifies strong customer service in every aspect of the job. Directs and controls the operation of the Grocery Department, including supervising and training personnel to achieve departmental and store sales and profit objectives. Provides feedback and recommendations on operational issues and personnel decisions to Store Director and Division management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Champion corporate and division customer service programs to meet or exceed division customer service goals. Instill a culture of excellent customer service in the department and throughout the store.

Responsible for total store operations and directing associates throughout the store, as well as department managers, in the absence of or as needed by the Store Director.

Primary duty is management of the Grocery Department. Plan, organize, and direct day‑to‑day operations of the Grocery department, including dairy and frozen food sections.

Conduct daily inspections of all Grocery sections and initiate corrective measures to ensure compliance with product quality, product rotation, cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security standards.

Control pricing by following established division pricing guidelines and ensuring compliance with coupon and discount policies.

Implement company and division operating and merchandising policies and practices. Control merchandise shrink and supervise inventory counts.

Establish Grocery Department operating procedures as required for implementation of company policies, division directives, and store director instructions. Implement emergency procedures in the event of equipment or computer software malfunctions.

Order grocery product and maintain inventory levels according to division directives. Supervise the processing of all reclamation and maintaining orderly and in‑stock conditions in back room, sales floor, and all grocery department areas.

Supervise receiving, storing, stocking, pricing, and merchandising of all Grocery products. Handle positive customer and vendor relations, engage in suggestive selling, and monitor daily log sheets, purchase reports, and actual versus projected sales and labor.

Prepare and display appropriate product signage.

Under the supervision of the Store Director, direct the work of all Grocery Department associates. Schedule associates to ensure adequate coverage and service levels, train, and participate in hiring of all Grocery Department personnel.

Monitor associate performance and recommend personnel actions such as hiring, firing, layoff, promotion, demotion, and disciplinary action. Build and maintain associate morale; resolve complaints and report actions to the Store Director.

Identify and train associates with high potential for advancement opportunities.

Understand the store and Grocery Department profit and loss statement, and plan department promotions accordingly. Communicate sales goals, department performance, and sales opportunities to associates.

Answer and respond to incoming telephone calls appropriately. Receive and appropriately resolve customer complaints and report to the Store Director as necessary.

Maintain confidentiality concerning associates, store sales, and company information. Maintain accurate department records.

Perform all job duties with honesty and integrity and in compliance with company policies and procedures.

Attend required training and sales meetings.

PHYSICAL AND GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Provide feedback and recommendations to Store Director, District Manager, or Director of Operations and Division management teams on operational issues.

Have extensive retail background with prior management experience related to retail operations and a thorough understanding of company practices, policies, and procedures.

Possess strong written and oral communication skills, leadership and interpersonal skills, proven ability to manage people, and maintain composure in dealing with customers and co‑workers. Knowledge of employment laws and workplace practices is essential.

Strong business and financial knowledge.

Identify needs, problems, and opportunities and make effective short‑ and long‑term plans to maximize sales and gross margins. Maintain knowledge of every position in the store, basic math, accounting, computer software, and compliance with state and federal regulations, including emergency plans.

Occasionally perform manual work such as setting up and maintaining displays, operating a cash register, and assisting in other departments. Stand and walk for long periods. Reach, lift, stack and maneuver objects up to approximately 50 lbs. Push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks. Cover various store positions as required.

Maintain mental alertness to ensure safe, accurate completion of work activities and repetitive work.

May utilize cleaning supplies and safety cutters.

Occasional travel, including overnight travel, may be required. Work nights, weekends, and holidays. Regular attendance required.

Comply with and ensure compliance with company grooming standards and dress code.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

May occasionally be exposed to temperatures from -20° to 400° Fahrenheit while handling products in freezers, coolers, display cases, ovens, hot cases, and fryers. Working conditions consist of a temperature‑controlled store environment with occasional outdoor exposure of varying temperatures.
