Senior Network Engineer
Location: Richmond, VA | Duration: 8 Months | Interview: In-person required, onsite work
VDOT is seeking an experienced Senior Network Engineer (Sr NE) to implement and provide support to the agency’s IT Network infrastructure. The Sr NE performs day-to-day activities related to support, documentation, research, analysis, and implementation of VDOT Network related infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain enterprise routers, switches, VPN concentrators, firewalls, wireless access points, and load balancers, including documentation, setup, configuration, upgrade, management, and troubleshooting.
Troubleshoot Network related infrastructure.
Identify and diagnose system problems using line monitors, diagnostic software, and test equipment.
Collaborate with agency IT infrastructure suppliers and stakeholders to gather requirements, specifications, and configurations, ensuring accuracy and currency.
Assist in troubleshooting and resolving network issues impacting application performance and uptime.
Assist in overseeing installation, documentation, and upgrades of agency facility data network infrastructure.
Collaborate with cloud and DevSecOps teams to optimize hybrid connectivity and SDWAN configurations.
Provide documentation, network architecture topology diagrams, IP schemes, firewall rules, and access controls when required.
Work independently on assigned projects.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Industry standard networking certification (e.g., Cisco CCNA, Juniper JNCIA-Junos) and minimum 8+ years of experience in enterprise networking.
Hands‑on experience designing, installing, and troubleshooting local‑area and wide‑area enterprise networks.
Direct engineering and design experience in the networking industry.
Experience monitoring IT environments for compliance with information security, architecture policies, and standards.
Experience creating repeatable, reliable, scalable network architectures with fault tolerance.
Experience performance tuning, monitoring systems, statistics/metrics collection, and disaster recovery.
Experience creating network diagrams using industry standard tools such as Visio.
Proficiency with networking features and protocols such as ARP, CDP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, VTP, EtherChannel, HSRP, QoS, multicast, IPsec, etc.
Experience working with SDWAN (Preferred 3+ years).
Experience working with cloud networking and network topology related to cloud deployments (Preferred 3+ years).
