Police Officer – Veterans Health Administration Salary Range:

$51,095.00 /yr – $74,042.00 /yr (US Department of Veterans Affairs pay range)

Summary Position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – Veterans Health Administration (VHA) – Police Service (PS). The mission of the Police Service is to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities.

Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement – 10/22/2025. The qualifications are described below by grade level, specialized experience, education, combination, driver license, firearm, and additional conditions of employment.

GS‑05 Grade Level Requirements:

Specialized experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑4 level in the federal service. Experience must include patrolling assigned areas to enforce laws, regulate traffic, control crowds, prevent crimes, and/or arrest violators. Security guard or corrections officer experience is not qualifying. Education: A bachelor’s degree in Police Science or equivalent, with transcripts required.

GS‑06 Grade Level Requirements:

At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS‑5). Experience must include maintaining order, responding to emergencies, gathering information, conducting patrols, and more. No educational substitution for this level. Volunteer work may count as qualifying experience.

Driver’s License Requirement:

Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted state driver’s license, a safe driving record, and pass a vehicle medical examination.

Firearm Requirement:

VA Police Officers must carry agency‑approved firearms on duty, meet and maintain qualification/certification, and comply with the Gun Control Act.

Additional Conditions of Employment:

New officers will attend an 8‑week training course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center. Designated drug‑testing position applicants will be subject to urinalysis. A medical examination is required, including vision, hearing, and emotional stability evaluation. A character investigation will be conducted.

Responsibilities / Duties

Protect the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property.

Prevent, detect, and investigate crimes.

Patrol assigned areas on foot or by motor vehicle.

Subdue persons causing disturbance or who threaten harm to themselves or others.

Follow rules/procedures concerning search and seizure of evidence and contraband.

Obtain search and arrest warrants.

Arrest violators.

Provide basic first aid and CPR prior to arrival of emergency medical personnel.

Prepare report of activities and events that occurred during shift.

Perform traffic control.

Assist citizens in emergency situations.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Compressed/Flexible Schedule.

Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours, and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service.

Candidates must be willing to be placed, detailed, or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations if necessary.

Physical Requirements: The job requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing, carrying items over 50 pounds, and dealing with hazardous materials. Physical agility, dexterity, and strength are essential.

Work Conditions: Moderate to high risks with potential for injury; requires safety precautions and personal protective equipment.

Promotion potential: Promotion to full performance level without further competition when regulatory qualifications are met.

Note: This position involves a multi‑grade career ladder.

Note: The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS‑6. At the GS‑5 level, assignments are more limited.
