Job Description The Field Service Engineer (FSE) will provide routine to complex field service support for our core Sievers brand total organic carbon (TOC) analytical instruments and accessories at customer sites predominantly within the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, with support for customers in Maryland and Virginia. Responsibilities include maintenance, verification, validation, repair, calibration, and troubleshooting. The FSE may also support Sievers Endotoxin and Bioburden instruments. Residency should be within the Greater Washington, D.C. or Rockville, MD areas and within 1 hour of Baltimore/Washington airports. Occasional field service support may be required for other Sievers customers within the East Service Region, Canada, and the US.
Key Characteristics We are looking for a resourceful, self-directed candidate who works independently, is detail-oriented, and can plan, schedule, and confirm contiguous services while balancing priorities. The candidate should apply a scientific approach to operation, maintenance, and repair of analytical instrumentation and complete daily and weekly administrative responsibilities. Client focus and clear, timely written and verbal communication are essential. Experience in technical field support, customer support, and ultra-pure water applications or lab instrumentation is preferred.
Duties & Responsibilities
Travel to customer sites and perform PM and related services on TOC equipment
Plan, schedule and confirm customer services, including coordination of travel and parts shipments
Maintain administrative duties, parts inventory, and relevant trainings
Take customer calls, participate in territory sales meetings, and service team meetings
Respond to on-demand contract services with 3 or 7 business day response commitments for troubleshooting and repair
Write clear and concise reports for customers
Lead special projects and participate in new hire training as assigned
Work closely with Sales to identify new instrument and service opportunities and upsell services and consumables as appropriate
Ensure compliance with safety policies and operate/maintain assigned company vehicle
Domestic travel up to 70%
Qualifications Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong technical, mathematical, and customer service skills
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks across instruments and administrative duties
Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with root-cause analysis
General knowledge of electrical equipment, chemistry, and safety
Vision, manual dexterity, and coordination to service instruments and handle electrical equipment
Ability to learn company procedures within a reasonable time from start of employment
Computer proficiency (word processing, spreadsheets, basic network and database knowledge)
Ability to use hand tools and analytical instrumentation, and handle chemically aggressive fluids
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Self-motivated with the ability to drive projects to completion with minimal oversight
Ability to speak effectively before groups and customers
Ability to meet deadlines and contribute within a commercial team environment
Ability to make sound business decisions based on risk-reward and objectives
Education & Experience Required
Associate Degree in a Science, Technical, or Engineering discipline, or equivalent education
At least 3 years of experience in ultra-pure water applications or servicing/operating analytical instrumentation in a lab environment
Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or Physics, or equivalent education
At least 1 year of experience in ultra-pure water applications or servicing/operating analytical instrumentation in a lab environment
Working Conditions
Flexible schedule based on customer needs
Maintain US driver’s license with a good driving record
Significant daily travel by car to customer sites
Air travel required for some assignments
Travel to customer sites with overnight stays approximately 30%–40% of the time
Use of laptop and mobile systems
Work around machines, electrical equipment, chemicals in industrial facilities
Work at customer sites including clean rooms and laboratories; may require clean suits
Manual dexterity for tool use and repair procedures
Physical capabilities: reach, stand, sit, kneel, crouch; close and color vision, depth perception
Work in environments with background noise; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
