Financial Counselor, Patient Access – St. Peter's Hospital – FT Rotating Shift Location: Albany, NY

Purpose Financial advocate for the patient and a liaison between Revenue Site Operations (RSO) and Patient Financial Services (PFS). Determines liability on patient accounts and works with patients or their representatives to provide financial assistance or secure payment.

Essential Functions

Research, collect & analyze information to identify opportunities and develop solutions.

Collaborate on performance improvement activities and distribute analytical reports.

Utilize multiple system applications for analysis, create reports & educational materials.

Research & compile data for operational projects, synthesize & analyze data, provide detailed summaries with graphical presentations.

Maintain knowledge of federal, state & local laws, Trinity Health Integrity & Compliance Program & Code of Conduct.

Provide patient counseling regarding treatment costs, insurance coverage, available payment resources, and financial assistance options.

Secure and document payment arrangements; submit authorization for high-cost infusion and oncology services.

Coordinate pre‑authorization process with patient, physician, insurance company and pharmaceutical company.

Validate diagnosis codes/medical necessity and prior therapy requirements per FDA and NCCN guidelines.

Assist patients with financing, payment plans, and assistance programs, including grants, co‑pay assistance for high‑cost pharmacy/drugs and free‑drugs for infusion and specialty care patients.

Monitor assigned patient accounts throughout the revenue cycle to ensure correct processing of copay program claims, payments, denials, and assistance programs.

Track and report all free drugs obtained.

Collaborate with treatment team on financial implications of medical intervention to the patient and healthcare provider.

Case‑manage complex financial clearance needs and elevate cases as appropriate.

Work closely with RSO and division leadership to improve collections.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

2 to 3 years experience in Patient Access or Patient Accounting for hospital registration and/or reimbursement services.

National certification in HFMA CRCR and/or NAHAM CHAA required within one year of hire.

Understanding of basic billing and coding.

Additional Qualifications (Nice to Have)

Bachelor’s degree or advanced certification (e.g., RN, Licensed Practical Nurse, Certified Pharmacy Technician, Health Information Technician, or medical coding certification).

Experience with EPIC preferred.

Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, VA, or Charity Care programs within the healthcare revenue cycle.

Pay Range $19.20–$24.60 per hour. Pay based on experience, skills, and education.
