Senior Electrical Engineer - 765kV EHV Substation Design Responsibilities

Function as a technical specialist or in a lead substation design role encompassing EHV transmission level voltage class.

Under general direction, develops and applies advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems.

Provide technical guidance over a group or supervise engineering staff on substation design projects.

May be responsible for developing, validating, and presenting specialist/technical output.

Lead other engineers and interface directly with clients.

Oversee the overall execution and quality of substation projects as a leader within a team environment.

Location and work arrangement

This position is based in Bloomington, MN. Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment, based on manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards: Develop and maintain budgets and schedules for multiple substation design projects.

Perform EHV substation design, including physical design, protective relaying/control with emphasis on continuous improvement.

Develop scoping documents for EHV substation projects.

Provide guidance on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and company policies.

Assist in developing, maintaining and updating engineering standards.

Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines.

Quality/Continuous Improvement: Ensure compliance with Black & Veatch quality program and perform internal QA reviews; support continuous improvement efforts.

Engineering Production: Prepare complex engineering deliverables, manage data, perform calculations, and oversee budget, schedule, and quality for projects. May supervise larger production teams or coordinate multi-discipline activity.

Project Coordination and Client Focus: Coordinate with internal/external teams; interface with clients, vendors and subcontractors; support business development as applicable.

Knowledge Sharing and Mentoring: Serve as a technical specialist and mentor less experienced engineers.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an accredited program.

Minimum of 8 years related work experience.

Must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search) in compliance with applicable laws.

Preferred Qualifications

Power/Power Systems experience preferred.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control of EHV substation design projects.

EHV Substation design experience (physical & P&C).

Technical experience in complex electrical design tasks such as one-line diagrams, protective relaying, grounding, and bus configurations.

Experience with 500 kV – 13.8 kV substations, open air and GIS installations.
