Senior GIS Technician Join the Planning and Development Department of Houston to improve the built and social environments of the city. The Senior GIS Technician plays a key role in maintaining critical GIS datasets that support 911 dispatch operations, city planning, and public services.

Position Profile The GIS Business Unit Team seeks a Lead GIS Technician to manage the City’s address and road range repository and other core datasets. Responsibilities include complex GIS editing, address validation, quality control, and customer service.

Description of Duties / Essential Functions

Perform complex data entry and advanced maintenance for GIS databases using ArcGIS Pro.

Research and evaluate source data; interpret and transfer data from source documents.

Establish data preparation standards, ensure database integrity, and conduct quality control.

Provide technical training, assistance, and review work for GIS projects.

Create, edit, and geocode GIS data files; develop address locators and troubleshoot locator behavior.

Operate and maintain data input/output devices and coordinate equipment maintenance.

Specific Responsibilities

Edit and maintain mission‑critical GIS data in ArcGIS Pro, ensuring geometry and attribute integrity.

Geocode data files, create address locators, and troubleshoot locator behaviors.

Maintain address and road data in compliance with Chapter 41 ordinance.

Interpret legal documents; convert legal descriptions into GIS features and reconcile conflicting data.

Perform QC within a versioned SDE environment.

Provide customer service for Chapter 41‑related questions and address validation.

Prepare maps and cartographic products.

Working Conditions Requires stooping, bending, and lifting items up to 30 pounds; occasional walking on rough surfaces. Exposure to office chemicals and use of a video display terminal may cause minor discomfort.

Educational Requirements Associate’s degree in Geographic Information Science, Planning, Geography, Computer Science, Information Science, or a closely related field.

Experience Requirements Two years of experience equivalent to a GIS Technician. A bachelor’s degree may substitute for the experience requirement on a year‑for‑year basis.

License Requirements None.

Skills & Competencies

Proficient in ArcGIS Pro with advanced editing and QC expertise.

Strong experience in geoprocessing, SQL, and GIS workflows.

Ability to geo‑reference CAD drawings and use the Traverse tool.

Solid understanding of data standardization and database best practices.

Experience in cartography, QA/QC, and troubleshooting.

Excellent customer service, communication, and presentation skills.

Selection / Skills Tests Required Application review and interview. The department may administer a skills assessment test.

Salary Information Pay Grade 17. Salary offered based on qualifications and pay rates for the classification.
