Job Description and Duties Under general direction of the Chief, Office of Corridor & System Planning (OCSP), the Senior Transportation Planner serves as the System Planning Branch Chief. Responsibilities include identifying community, transit, bicycle, pedestrian, climate, freight, and roadway needs on the state highway system; developing and implementing performance‑based planning studies; creating workflows, guidance, or tools to enhance statewide system planning; ensuring continuous communication and cooperation among OCSP, Modal Offices, Divisions, and Districts; managing staff workload assignments, hiring, training, database filing systems, contracts, meetings, documents, and legislation analysis; providing support to other Senior Transportation Planner assignments; and ensuring planning solutions align with Governor’s Executive Orders, CAPTI, CTP, Caltrans Strategic Plan, and other relevant policies.

Eligibility and Examination Eligibility for hire may be determined by the Senior Transportation Planner exam score. Candidates who are not currently eligible (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, voluntary demotion) or are new to state civil services employment must be on the state examination list. Working Conditions Position is in an office setting with dual‑monitor computer. The incumbent works under artificial light, predominantly sitting or standing. Telework may be eligible; specifics follow Caltrans telework policy. The candidate may be required to conduct business travel and commute to the headquarters.

Senior Transportation Planner salary range: $8,678.00 - $10,783.00.

New to state candidates receive minimum or alternate salary range as applicable.
