State of Alaska . The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Fire Protection, is recruiting for a Wildland Fire & Resource Technician (Prevention Technician) in Soldotna, Alaska. What You Will Be Doing

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is looking for a motivated individual to join our team as a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician III (Prevention Technician). This permanent seasonal position is staffed for 7 months (March 1 – September 30) annually, but may be staffed for a longer period depending on available funding. This position serves as a prevention technician, assisting with the implementation, education, engineering, and enforcement aspects of the area’s fire prevention program. Assists and or conducts Wildland Fire Investigations and performs as an Initial Attack Incident Commander on wildland fires. Assists with and conducts wildland fire investigations (for criminal and civil prosecution). Helps to assemble and complete the citation package ready for court. Issues burn permits and performs as the initial attack incident commander for wildland fire suppression. Assists with the tracking of daily fire indices and burning conditions. Helps to collect and analyze statistical information based on patterns and trends in burn permit usage and assists in completing the fire statistical data report on an annual basis. Assists with educating and informing the public concerning wildland fire prevention measures and the current fire danger level. Mission, Values & Working Environment

The Kenai/Kodiak Area covers extensive public and private lands on the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island. Position-Specific Competencies

Fire Management: Knowledge of fire management concepts, behavior, ecology, prescribed fire methods, fire detection, prevention and suppression strategies, and integration with natural resource management. Incident Management: Knowledge of tactics, technologies, principles, and processes to protect, analyze, prioritize, and handle incidents. Investigation: Knowledge of investigation guidelines and procedures, including interviewing, evidence handling, reporting findings, and presenting evidence. Oral and Written Communication: Clear communication tailored to audience; effective oral and written presentations; active listening. Self-Management: Sets realistic goals; demonstrates initiative and reliability; works with minimal supervision. Click here

to learn more about working for the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection. Twelve months of wildland fire fighting or forestry field experience, at least six months at the developmental level. Developmental experience may be met by service as a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 2 with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere. Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System is required. Substitution

Completed coursework from an accredited college or vocational technical school in forestry, fire science, or related field may substitute for six months of general field experience. College credits criteria apply; transcripts or a letter from a vocational technical school must indicate credit equivalency. There is no substitution for the six months of developmental experience or for the Red Card qualifications. Special Note

Applicants must be at least eighteen years old. National Incident Qualification System certifications are typically required; recruitment will consider candidates who meet listed requirements in this bulletin. Specialty areas include fire operations, wildland fire prevention, and aviation support. Applicants must pass the Work Capacity Test at the “Arduous” level (3-mile hike with 45-pound pack in 45 minutes). An Alaska driver’s license is preferred or required to report for duty. Some positions may require travel; recall status may be required during the fire season. A commercial driver’s license with endorsements may be required for some positions. Provide materials at interview: a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one, copies of forestry/fire-related certificates, and two most recent performance evaluations or references. Must be certified as Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5) within 12 months of hire and as a Wildland Firefighter 2 or higher (NWCG Red Card). Some requirements may include travel and driving prerequisites. EEO Statement
