Overview
Recreation Leader (Part-time up to 19 hours per week) – City of La Palma. This is an open recruitment to fill one current vacancy and to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis. First review is scheduled for November 17, 2025. The incumbent will enjoy a family environment and be part of an enthusiastic work force. Base pay range
$16.50/hr - $21.67/hr
RECREATION LEADER: $16.50 to $20.06 per hour SENIOR RECREATION LEADER: $17.83 to $21.67 per hour
Essential duties
Responsibilities include planning, organizing, and leading a variety of recreational activities and programs for community members of all ages; supervising activities; ensuring safety and enjoyment of participants; and maintaining recreational facilities and equipment. May assist full-time recreation staff and lead staff in coordinating and directing programs. If selected as a Senior Recreation Leader, provide lead direction for Recreation Leaders and volunteers. Duties may include officiating and coordinating programs, maintaining records, and processing permits.
Responsibilities (selected examples)
Organize, conduct, and supervise free play and team activities for children and adults; officiate and instruct in games (e.g., basketball, softball, football, baseball, volleyball, track and field). Supervise daily drop-in activities; maintain facilities; assist with permits; assist with events, tournaments, and setup/takedown. Maintain dressing rooms and clean recreation facilities and restrooms. Assist with special events, programs for Tiny Tot and Teen programs, and Day Camp; maintain records and order supplies. Provide lead direction to subordinate staff and volunteers; officiate in a wide variety of sports; train staff in rules and safety.
Qualifications
Knowledge of programs common to recreation, sports, and youth programs; first aid techniques. Ability to supervise and monitor games and activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships; follow oral instructions. Education and/or experience: Any combination that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities. Examples include: participation in team or individual sports, or service as a leader or volunteer in organizations such as scouting, Y, Little League, or recreation departments.
Special requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age or enrolled in college. Must possess a California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
Senior Recreation Leader (lead role)
Provides lead direction to subordinate staff and volunteers; coordinates and directs varied activities in a community recreation program; officiates in sports and assists in program evaluation and reporting. Requires similar qualifications with additional responsibility for supervision and coordination.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Frequently required to walk, run, sit, and talk or hear. May involve handling objects; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Visual requirements include close and color vision. Work may occur outdoors in various weather conditions; exposure to chemicals may occur.
