Description
The Department of Anesthesiology employs over 200 academic and staff personnel with a defined operating budget and multiple funding sources. The Department provides Clinical Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Services across UC San Diego Health campuses. This role is for a Sr. Physician Assistant (PA) in the Anesthesiology Department's Pain Division. The UC San Diego Center for Pain Medicine includes physicians, fellows, and physician assistants with clinic offices and procedural clinics across multiple campuses. Under the supervision of pain medicine physicians, the PA provides clinical care for patients in outpatient and inpatient settings, conducts new and return visits, and supports triage and response to patient or outside provider inquiries.
The PA acts as a liaison with physicians to promote consistent medical management and collaborates with the multidisciplinary care team. Under supervision, the PA performs physical examinations, evaluates care plans, makes adjustments, and orders pain therapies including procedures, physical and complementary therapies, psychological therapy, and medications. The PA performs office-based pain procedures, covers inpatient pain consults, assists with operating room procedures, coordinates outpatient care, and supports education for patients, families, staff, and learners. The PA may participate in ongoing clinical trials regarding patient recruitment or clinical care.

Minimum Qualifications
Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
California Physician Assistant (PA) license.
Current PA Certification from NCCPA.
BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to obtain UCSD BART within 6 months of hire date.
Minimum one (1) year of work experience as a licensed Physician Assistant. Experience must include pain management.
Demonstrated understanding and experience evaluating and treating acute and chronic pain including cancer pain, post-operative pain and other chronic pain conditions.
Ability to engage patients in discussions of risks vs. benefits of therapies and to understand medical and psychosocial needs of patients with acute and chronic pain.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize in a high-volume, dynamic setting.
Skill in patient interviewing, obtaining medical history, and collecting pertinent data.
Skill in performing focused musculoskeletal and neurologic examinations.
Proficiency in accurate and concise documentation of patient history, exam, and treatment response.
Knowledge of common diagnostic tests and ability to identify deviations.
Strong computer skills for entry and retrieval of patient data (Epic preferred).
Experience providing patient education and counseling and developing treatment plans.
Knowledge of analgesic medications and risk assessment related to analgesic prescribing and opioid safety.
Preferred Qualifications
Two (2) or more years of pain management experience as a licensed Physician Assistant.
Knowledge of indications, risks, and benefits of interventional therapies for chronic pain.
Experience working with clinical trials and identifying potential trial participants.
Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices and federal guidelines for protection of human subjects.
Special Conditions
Employment is subject to a criminal background check, pre-employment physical, and drug testing.
Must obtain and maintain UCSD Medical Staff privileges; clinical APP experience within the last two years is preferred.
Must be willing and able to work a variable schedule based on clinical operations and needs.
Must be willing and able to travel occasionally to attend investigator and national meetings.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $160,922 - $211,974 (prorated if appointment percentage
Hourly Equivalent: $77.07 - $101.52
Factors in determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business needs. The posted range may be broader than actual pay depending on internal equity, budget, and bargaining agreements.
