COMMUNICATION TECHNICIAN I – OVERVIEW Communication Technician I

installs, maintains, and repairs telecommunications, electronics, and network equipment. The Telecommunication Services Division integrates all PBX and VoIP, audio, security, automation, and low voltage electronics. Duties include installing and repairing communication and electronic equipment Countywide; installing and configuring network hardware and software; troubleshooting system malfunctions; and repairing and installing telephone and data electronics, audio, and automated systems.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Pre‑Employment Process:

Incumbent must successfully complete a background investigation (fingerprinting and work history/education check) and a job‑related physical exam, including a drug test.

Travel:

A valid California Class C Driver License is required. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.

Working Conditions:

Employees are subject to On‑Call duties, 24‑hour call back, and may be asked to work during unusual hours, inclement weather, and other adverse circumstances. Duties may include working in confined spaces and climbing ladders to install, inspect, and maintain equipment.

Sponsorship:

San Bernardino County cannot consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Eighteen (18) months, within the last three (3) years, of full‑time equivalent experience installing, maintaining, and repairing telecommunications, electronics, PBX’s, IP voice, audio, automation, fiber optics, or low voltage electronics.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units of completed post‑high school technical coursework in electronics or communication technology. A list of related coursework must be submitted with the application.

Substitution:

One (1) additional year of qualifying experience may substitute the education requirement.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

Education in electronics or communication technology.

Certifications in Cisco and Nortel.

Current work experience in the industry.
