Job Summary

The Public Works Department provides a variety of services related to the development, construction, inspection, improvement, and maintenance of the City's infrastructure. This infrastructure includes traffic lights, sidewalks, streetlights, and roadways. In addition, Public Works runs the following enterprise operations: Water, Solid Waste, Wastewater, Stormwater, and Parking Operations. The City of Beverly Hills is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Park Services Worker. The incumbent of this position will be working in the Parks Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. Individuals in this role perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled gardening, building, landscaping and turf maintenance duties. Park Services Workers are also responsible for repairing the grounds areas as well as operating a variety of grounds equipment. The ideal candidate will have previous professional experience working in landscaping, groundskeeping, park maintenance, and / or irrigation systems.

Selection Process

All applicants must submit clear, concise and complete information regarding their qualifications for the position, including detailed responses to all supplemental questions. The selection process may consist of the following components: Supplemental Questionnaire, In-person multiple-choice exam, Panel interview. All candidates who pass the written exam will earn placement on an eligibility list, which may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification. The eligibility list established for this recruitment may also be used to fill a lower-level position.

Major Duties

Maintains planting, grounds, recreation areas and medians for conformance to City standard. Waters, weeds, trims, seeds, renovates and fertilizes turf, shrubs, trees and flower beds for conformance to City standards. Rakes leaves, cleans walk, fields, courts and other facilities and loads trimmings into trucks for conformance to City standards. Spades and otherwise prepares ground around plants and shrub, including mixing and applying fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides. Performs general grounds cleaning. Maintains and prepares athletic fields. Drives vehicles used to transport materials, tools and equipment as required. Assists in moving and installing park and recreational equipment. Operates the mowing equipment, tractors, trenchers and a variety of hand and power tools used in park and landscape maintenance work. Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of high school or equivalent and one year of experience. Possession of a valid California driver's license. Must possess valid First Aid and CPR certificates or obtain within 60 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of : Safe work practices. Basic instruction and repair. Plant and turf pests and diseases and methods for control and eradication. Proper and effective use of grounds maintenance tools, equipment and materials.

Skill in : Performing grounds maintenance work. Operating a full range of light and heavy equipment utilized in landscape maintenance work. Mixing and applying herbicides. Performing heavy manual labor. Working effectively with others.
