Construction Accounting Controller

The Hills . This role is located at one of Discovery Land Company’s locations: The Hills, East Quogue, New York. The Hills is seeking a Construction Accounting Controller to join the Finance and Accounting Department. This role requires an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Construction Accountant to maintain accurate financial records, ensure compliance, and support the financial health of our Construction and Development organization. Responsibilities
General Ledger Management: Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts; prepare and post journal entries; manage construction accounting processes; ensure compliance with company expectations, processes, and controls; provide oversight and control of internal financial processes; manage construction cash management (including reviewing/approving check requests, funds transfers, distribution analysis, recording cash receipts). Financial Reporting: Assist in preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP; contribute to internal and external financial reports; review and approve monthly owner billings; manage project deadlines for billings and month end close; prepare monthly financial statements. Budgeting and Forecasting: Support budgeting/forecasting with department heads; monitor actual vs. budget/forecast with variance analysis; prepare revenue and cost forecasts as required. Account Reconciliation: Reconcile/analyze balance sheet accounts; ensure accuracy in bank reconciliations and other critical reconciliations; prepare schedules and journal entries; oversee A/R and accounts payable as needed; perform bank reconciliations; assist leadership with annual budget and variance communications. Fixed Assets Management: Oversee fixed assets register, classification, tracking, and depreciation; conduct periodic reviews/audits. Expense Management: Analyze/reconcile expenses; process expense reports and reimbursements; maintain knowledge of company systems (Intacct and Procore); oversee and review job close procedures. Internal Controls: Develop/enhance internal controls; monitor compliance with policies; manage project compliance documents (contract and cost/budget). Audit Support: Oversee project audits; assist in preparing schedules/documentation for audits; address auditor inquiries and support audit issue resolution. Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. CPA certification is a plus. Experience: 8 years of experience in accounting or finance roles. Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with accounting software; knowledge of GAAP and construction financial reporting; familiarity with construction WIP schedules; knowledge/recent use of Intacct (preferred) and Procore (preferred). Attention to Detail: Strong accuracy, ability to identify and rectify errors; organized and prioritizes tasks; ability to meet deadlines. Communication: Effective written and verbal communication; ability to collaborate across teams. Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks; willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities. Additional Requirements
Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and strong communication/interpersonal skills for service to members, guests, and team members. Flexibility in work hours/schedule; ability to work in a team environment; ability to stay calm during busy times. English language proficiency; additional languages preferred. Physical requirements: ability to work indoors/outdoors in all weather, stand/walk/move for extended periods, and lift/carry items up to 50 pounds. Benefits
