Yale New Haven Health is expanding its neurosurgery services to include 24/7 Advanced Practice Provider (APP) coverage. We are seeking motivated and skilled Physician Assistants to join our growing neurosurgery team. This dynamic role offers a rotating schedule of either four 10‑hour shifts or three 13‑hour shifts, including days, nights, and weekends, to support continuous patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Provide post‑operative care for neurosurgical patients, including those with brain, spine, and stroke‑related conditions
Perform daily rounding and post‑operative management
Prepare and complete discharge summaries
Assist with the management of patients with external ventricular drains (EVDs)
Evaluate and manage neurosurgery consults, including:
Presenting and discussing cases with neurosurgeons
Acting as a liaison between neurosurgery and other services (Medicine, Surgery, Trauma, SICU)
Respond to trauma patients with critical neurosurgical injuries in collaboration with trauma and emergency teams
Perform bedside procedures including:
Removal of neurosurgical drains
Assistance with EVD placement
Preferred Qualifications
Significant operative responsibility. Looking for someone with OR first assisting experience
Previous experience in neurosurgery, critical care, trauma, or surgical subspecialties preferred
Proficient in high‑acuity patient management and multidisciplinary coordination
Strong communication and critical thinking skills
Willingness to work flexible schedules including nights and weekends

Clinical Care
The Physician Assistant (PA) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The PA may perform procedures, prescribe treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines, and may function as first or second assistant on operative cases (within position scope and educational prerequisites).
Patient Education & Psychosocial Support
The PA educates patients/families on care plans, treatment options, potential side effects, and discharge instructions. The PA provides psychosocial support to patients, their families, and significant others in a caring, ethical, and professional manner.
Information Management
The PA ensures appropriate documentation within hospital and regulatory requirements and protects all forms of information from unauthorized access, modification, or disclosure.
Quality Management
The PA demonstrates high ethical standards, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care, while ensuring compliance with patient‑related healthcare regulatory requirements and standards.
Professional Development
The PA engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency, serves as a clinical resource for new staff, mentors pre‑PA candidates, and collaborates on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Education
Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant Program. Clinical working experience as a PA in the specialty/service line is preferred but not required.
Licensure
Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Connecticut State Physician Assistant License. ACLS/BLS Certified. DEA License when indicated for position profile.
