Under general supervision, the Sr. Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory duties, including specimen collection, waived and moderate testing (including microscopy), and EKGs. The Sr. Phlebotomist will have a strong background in phlebotomy, laboratory procedures, and patient care. This position requires excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills. The Senior Phlebotomist will work independently and as part of a team to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Primary Responsibilities

Venipuncture and specimen collection: Collect blood specimens from patients using venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques promptly

Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work environment

Process and prepare specimens for testing and transport

Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to specimen collection, testing, and equipment

Provide proper patient collection instructions (e.g., urine collection, stool collection)

Instruct patients in post-phlebotomy care

Properly dispose of bio-hazardous and sharps materials

Obtain specimens for microbiology testing

Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and other miscellaneous services

Order and rotate supplies to prevent use of outdated items

Follow the venipuncture standard of work (SOW) and the processing SOW with positive patient identification

Perform waived and moderate complexity laboratory testing

Performs both waived and moderate complexity laboratory testing, including microscopy

Maintain accurate records of patient information, test results, and laboratory procedures

Perform quality control and calibration procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability

Participate in quality assurance and proficiency testing

Follow the resulting standard of work (SOW) and the processing SOW

Participate in competency assessment

Follow The Everett Clinic (TEC) lab procedures and guidelines

Follow the Calling Critical Value policy

Interact with patients and healthcare providers in a professional and compassionate manner

While registering patients, follow the reception standard of work (SOW)

Problem solve efficiently and promptly

Locate missing lab orders and specimens

Demonstrate competent and efficient phone skills

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or GED

Completion of a Phlebotomy Certificate program from an accredited school

Preferred Qualifications

Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MA-Pbt) certification from the state of Washington to perform capillary and venous procedures under supervision

BLS (AHA) certification required or obtained within the first 30 days of employment

Clinically documented training covering CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1423

2+ years of blood draw experience

Experience performing EKGs with accurate readings

Medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology knowledge

Knowledge of laboratory information systems and EMR

Strong organizational and time management skills

Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work environment

Ability to troubleshoot and resolve specimen collection, testing, and equipment issues

Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with high accuracy

Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities

Experience working with diverse patient populations (infants to geriatric)

Thorough understanding of phlebotomy techniques, safety protocols

Knowledge of safety hazards and safe work practices

Knowledge of waived laboratory testing, including QC and troubleshooting

Familiarity with EKG procedures and acceptable results

Attention to detail and accuracy

Understanding of HIPAA and compliance standards

Typical Working Conditions Exposure to clinical environment conditions, including potential exposure to infectious diseases and chemicals. Work is busy and may require irregular hours.

Pay is based on factors including location, experience, and certifications. The role offers comprehensive benefits, incentive programs, and retirement plans. The hourly pay range for this role is $17.74 to $31.63 per hour for full-time employment, subject to eligibility and applicable laws.
