The Phlebotomist obtains blood specimens from patients by the invasive procedure of venipuncture. Once proficient in adult and geriatric venipuncture and with additional training, the phlebotomist performs skin puncture on neonates, skin puncture or venipuncture on children and adolescents. The phlebotomist is a liaison between the physician and Rush Medical Laboratories. The phlebotomist (Laboratory Liaison Technician) is responsible for collecting specimens for routine, timed and STAT collections. The phlebotomist interacts and communicates with physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel and other members of the health care team. High School graduate. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications

National Phlebotomy Association or equivalent certification. Two years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting. Physical Demands

Works throughout the Medical Center's patient care areas and laboratories. Frequent exposure to potentially infectious diseases and body fluids. Work requires bending, standing and walking for the majority of the workday. Responsibilities

Verifies patient identification according to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) all of the time. Identifies and labels specimens according to SOP all of the time. Collects specimens according to laboratory requirements. Acquires specimens using proper phlebotomy technique. Has a positive effect on others including the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships. Inspires goodwill, cooperation, trust, and mutual respect among a wide range of people. Acts as a resource person to others for technical questions. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the technical tasks (e.g., obtaining timed collections when due, appropriate site for specimen collection, order of draw, and scheduling of various specimen collections). Attends and documents continuing education hours. Helps train students and new employees. Completes training checklists within established deadlines. Gathers data or examples of orders or specimen collections for recurrent problems (e.g., order modification process for CPOE/EPIC orders). Acts as "tech-in-charge" for specified periods; oversees operations according to departmental guidelines. Benefits and Additional Information
