Under the supervision of the Manager of Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, the Phlebotomist performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. The role involves collecting samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on the assigned unit, transporting specimens, and completing basic records. The position also fosters patient and family centered care and aligns with Brown University Health’s mission, vision, and values. Responsibilities

Performs functions associated with the computer system to assure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens. Handles patient registration: identification, verification, insurance information, guarantor, PCP, ordering provider, test orders, diagnostic codes, and document scanning. Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABNSN): obtains supporting diagnostic codes, reviews documentation, captures patient signatures, and manages scanning. Conducts clerical activities such as medical necessity follow‑up, sorting and filing records, daily checklists, answering phones, report delivery, and receiving patients into clinical treatment areas. Monitors standing orders for expiration and renewals, ensuring tasks are completed. Provides patients with test forms, instructions on preparation, and other information as needed. Schedules venipunctures or capillary blood punctures according to priority and test type, including timed studies. Utilizes computer‑generated collection labels and references the Pathology Handbook to ensure specimens are collected in proper containers and meet special collection requirements. Verifies patient identity and prepares patients (e.g., fasting, special diet) prior to venipuncture. Obtains blood samples using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques; alerts nursing staff or supervisor to deviations or adverse conditions. Collects other types of specimens such as throat cultures. Performs processing tasks, including centrifuging and specimen tracking. Obtains samples for specialized tests (e.g., thyroid releasing hormone, therapeutic drug monitoring, D‑xylose tolerance). Monitors patients for reactions such as diaphoresis and sleeping. Labels, wraps, and transports samples according to type and urgency. Maintains records on sample procurement. Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certificate through National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and/or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures. In lieu of internship, six months of phlebotomy experience may be considered. In lieu of phlebotomy certification, five or more years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered. Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants. Interpersonal skills to obtain and provide information to patients and explain procedures effectively. Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients considering aging processes, developmental stages, and cultural patterns. Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports; keyboard skills to enter and retrieve information. Familiarity with blood specimen equipment, anticoagulants, special precautions, and interference. Ability to distinguish chromatic colors. Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Works in an in‑patient care environment with considerable walking between units; may involve manual dexterity for venipunctures and exposure to odors. Exposure to communicable diseases is minimized by infection control procedures. Compensation
