Overview
SPU is seeking an experienced Heavy Truck Driver in the Water Operations and System Maintenance Branch. The successful candidate will operate dump trucks and tilt‑deck trailer combos or three-axle trucks to haul materials or equipment to assigned destinations within the Greater Seattle area. This position reports to the Water Crew Chief. Locations include North Operations Center (1318 N 128th St, Seattle) and/or the Operations Control Center (2700 Airport Way S, Seattle). Drive heavy trucks (including dump trucks with tilt trailers) and operate equipment to haul materials or equipment to construction sites. Work at various city locations performing maintenance of the City’s water system, repairs, leak fixes, and installation of new services and valves. Operate mechanical and hydraulic equipment attached to trucks (trailers, winches, hoists, pumps, compressors). Haul spoil and fill material to and from job sites and other destinations. Ensure safety regulations are observed during loading, rigging, transporting, and unloading of materials. Inspect vehicles prior to operation and perform minor repairs; maintain mileage and maintenance records. Perform other related duties as assigned and work with a diverse team. Experience: One (1) year of experience operating heavy trucks, including multi-axle trucks and truck/trailer or tractor/trailer combinations. Knowledge of City, State, and Federal rules governing safe operation of truck/trailer and tractor/trailer combinations. Experience Equivalency: Combinations of education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated for comparability to requirements. Licenses/ Certifications: Commercial Driver's License – Class A with airbrake restriction removed. Valid Medical Certificate. Endorsements as applicable; additional certifications (Tanker endorsement, Washington State Flagging card, Forklift Certification, First Aid/CPR) may be required within six months at City expense. Preferred qualifications include experience operating hydro excavators or Vactor trucks, driving in construction zones, and a strong safety record. Candidates should demonstrate time management, customer service, teamwork and flexibility, with on-call availability for emergencies. Working Environment/Physical Demands
May require weekends, holidays, extended shifts, overtime, and stand-by rotation. Stand, walk, or bend for extended periods; lift objects weighing over 50 pounds. Spend long periods driving in heavy traffic and adverse weather conditions. Supplemental Application & How to Apply
