Summary/Objective The CAD Designer III works from rough engineering notes, drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions to create complex electronic and/or mechanical designs and layouts. They work closely with engineers, product developers, and manufacturers to ensure that the final designs meet performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost objectives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Designs or modifies existing designs to develop or improve products or facilitate manufacturing operations.
Determines design characteristics such as PC board path layout and component configuration, internal and external packaging, panel/control layouts, functional configuration, and chassis/frame design.
Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, tooling and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability and serviceability.
Makes layouts of complex assemblies and detail parts of devices, mechanisms, circuits etc.
Designs and develops multilayer PCBs using industry-standard EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tools (e.g. Altium Designer, KCad, Cadence Allegro, Mentor Graphics).
Collaborates with electrical engineers to interpret schematics and translate them into PCB layouts.
Performs component placement, routing, signal integrity analysis, and design rule checks (DRC).
Creates and maintains detailed manufacturing documentation including Gerber files, BOMs (Bill of Materials), assembly drawings, and fabrication notes.
Conducts DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) reviews with the manufacturing team.
Incorporates mechanical, thermal, and EMC/EMI considerations into PCB layouts.
Participates in design reviews and recommends improvements and optimizations.
Works with vendors and contract manufacturers during the prototype and production phases to troubleshoot and resolve design issues.
Maintains libraries of PCB footprints and symbols according to international standards.
Other duties and projects as assigned.
Position Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent.
AA degree, Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent experience in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Mechanical or Electronics Technology, or related field.
4+ years of experience in CAD design for commercial, industrial, or consumer products.
Proficiency with SolidWorks and one or more PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, Allegro).
Understanding of high-speed design principles, controlled impedance routing, power distribution, and grounding techniques.
Familiarity with IPC standards (e.g., IPC-2221, IPC-7351).
Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE
Experience with rigid-flex or flexible PCB designs techniques.
Knowledge of RF PCB design techniques.
Certification such as IPC Certified Interconnect Designer (CID) is a plus.
