Tax Supervisor
The Tax Supervisor has the technical knowledge and research background needed to serve as the supervisor of the university's non-resident alien income tax compliance program and assists the Tax Director with other university tax compliance needs.
The role manages tax determination systems, interprets IRS regulations and tax treaties, and collaborates with university departments.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree - OR - equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of four (4) years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's in Accounting, tax specialization with a CPA.
Minimum 4 years university tax or comparable public accounting/other tax experience.
Degree Equivalency Clause
Four years of direct experience for a bachelor's degree.

SB 1310: Substitution of Work Experience for Postsecondary Education Requirements
A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required, not to exceed:
Two years of direct experience for an associate degree.
Four years of direct experience for a bachelor's degree.
Six years of direct experience for a master's degree.
Seven years of direct experience for a professional degree.
Nine years of direct experience for a doctoral degree.
Related work experience may not substitute for any required licensure, certification, or registration required for the position of employment as established by the public employer and indicated in the advertised description of the position of employment.
Minimum Qualifications that require a high school diploma are exempt from SB 1310.

Responsibilities
Supervises and assists team responsible for processing payments to non-US citizens.
Conducts tasks including but not limited to determining an individuals' tax status, performing the substantial presence test/ treaty analysis, coding of taxes/treaty benefits, determining required tax withholding for athletic and educational scholarships, employment, contractual services and other educational payments.
Reconciles taxes withheld from university payments to IRS deposits and amounts reported on IRS Forms 1042 and 1042S.
Files IRS Forms 1042 and 1042S, annually.
Identifies and develops improvements and efficiencies for university tax reporting and compliance.
Makes university department unrelated business income tax workpapers, reviews and recommends updates to comply with federal and state tax laws and regulations.
Compiles report of university revenue generating activities and documents university tax positions.
Performs UBI research and prepares federal and state unrelated business income tax returns and supporting workpapers.
Advises university departments on tax implications of university transactions.
Conducts federal, state, international/non-resident alien tax research to address specific issues and provides guidance to university management, departments and staff.
Participates in university revenue generating contract and sponsorship agreement reviews.
Assists with university department ongoing tax issues to ensure proper tax reporting and compliance.
Monitors changes in federal and state tax law and regulations impacting universities, specific to non-resident alien taxation, immigration, unrelated business income taxation, and state sales tax.
Summarizes impact of new laws and develops new university processes.
Assists Tax Director with audit responses. Attends non-resident alien and university tax conferences and trainings. Participates in peer discussions and meetings.
