The Gaston Group, LLC
The Gaston County Police Department was created by Legislative Act on July 1, 1957 and began operation with a chief, a secretary, and 23 sworn officers. At that time the Department was primarily responsible for providing police service to the unincorporated areas of the county. Today the Department employs 153 sworn officers who serve a community of approximately 90 000 residents across an area of over 270 square miles, including the incorporated towns of High Shoals and Spencer Mountain.
Examples of Duties
Perform uniformed patrol in unincorporated areas, enforce traffic laws, conduct accident investigations, and investigate crime scenes.
Conduct undercover investigations and provide drug and crime prevention programs to individuals and public groups.
Place individuals under arrest and testify in court proceedings.
Initiate and complete records of actions taken and enter data in manual and/or computerized police record‑management systems.
Minimum Qualifications All candidates must be at least twenty (20) years of age, possess a valid N.C. driver’s license without restrictions, and agree to relocate to Gaston County or one of the surrounding counties (Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Cleveland, or York County, SC) at time of employment. Candidates must also pass a drug screening test and a physical examination, psychological testing, and a thorough background evaluation. The applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A course of study in Criminal Justice or a related field is desired. Applicants who are anticipating graduation may be hired prior to completion; permanent status will be granted only upon receipt of the degree.
Additional Information The Pay Scale for this position is:
$22.45 – $37.06 per hour (Police Officer I – Cadet)
$24.71 – $40.76 per hour (Police Officer II – Sworn)
Police Officers may receive a take‑home vehicle and a lateral pay adjustment based on years of service plus a bonus. All applicants will undergo additional physical examinations, psychological testing, and a thorough background evaluation. If the position requires working with children, the applicant must be subject to a criminal history check conducted by the South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement, in accordance with G.S. 153A‑94.2(b) and G.S. 143B‑1209.26.
