Responsibilities
Provide advocacy services including safe and confidential emergency shelter to survivors and their children
Provide advocacy, information, referral services, court advocacy, case management, and follow up services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, human trafficking and stalking
Assist in developing safety plans for survivors and their children
Assist with coverage for crisis services and be on call 24 hours a day while tasked with this responsibility (during on-call time, the Advocate must refrain from consuming alcohol and must stay within a 30-minute drive time of the business office)
Handle crisis line calls, provide support, information, services and referrals as needed
Carry out and/or assist with intakes
Provide support, information, and referral services to survivors and their children and/or families
Provide assistance with protection orders; accompany survivors to court for court hearings
Provide transportation to survivors and their children as necessary and reasonable in accordance with our Transportation Policy
Collaborate with law enforcement, probation officers, prosecutors, and courts along with medical and counseling organizations to better serve the needs of survivors and their children
Maintain all necessary statistical data and records in the database
Assist in developing and implementing an outreach program so that the community is aware of Bright Horizons and the services that we provide
Assist in providing informational presentations as requested
Travel throughout the area to distribute brochures, posters, and informational materials
Monitor all shelter activities during the Advocate’s shift
Stock shelter house with groceries and supplies as needed
Assist with cleaning and maintenance of the shelter house and grounds
Attend trainings offered to increase knowledge of advocacy and prevention
Stay up-to-date on current research regarding domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, human trafficking and stalking
Compile statistics used for grant reports
Attend weekly staff briefings and monthly All Staff meetings to stay current with agency and advocacy-related developments
Provide advocacy services to all Spanish speaking clients throughout our service area
Assist with developing an outreach program to the Spanish speaking community
Plan and conduct outreach at the Tyson Fresh Meat plant as requested
Provide case management and assistance with clients applying for legal status through the immigration process
Meet with transitional shelter clients weekly to monitor their progress
Conform with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as all Bright Horizons’ policies and procedures
Maintain a positive, professional working relationship with representatives of Bright Horizons’ business partners, co-workers, volunteers, and supervisors within Bright Horizons
Complete any other duties as assigned by supervisor
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
At least 21 years of age with a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
Dedication to the goals of Bright Horizons
Valid Nebraska driver’s license with no more than three points assessed, automobile insurance, and vehicle
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to work sensitively with survivors and their children in crisis situations
Maturity, honesty, and a non-judgmental attitude
Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with staff and volunteers
Ability to remain calm in crisis situations
An interest in and knowledge of issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, human trafficking and stalking
General computer experience
Proficient in a second language
An interest in and knowledge of issues related to immigration
