DESCRIPTION
As the Senior Accountant (internally title Accounting Manager), you will join a growing accounting team to support the development of systems, processes, policies, and procedures to support the launch and growth of a non‑profit network of tuition‑free, Montessori‑inspired preschools in underserved communities. You will report to the Controller and will be responsible for day‑to‑day operations of accounting processes and procedures including end‑to‑end general ledger accounting, fixed asset, leasing, tax, and completing the monthly close and accounting reporting deliverables. You will assist with technical accounting research for US GAAP and tax‑related matters and support with preparation of external reporting. You will assist in creating and maintaining accounting policies and procedures that support a strong internal control environment. You will also be hands‑on in improving current systems and solving challenges related to future system and process design. Above all, you are a mission‑driven, experienced accounting professional who is willing to roll up your sleeves to build accounting operations while developing the systems and processes necessary to scale our organization and its impact.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or economics
- Five years of progressive accounting experience, with at least two years of public accounting experience
- Experience managing the full monthly close process, including reconciliations and financial reporting
- Experience and proficiency at researching technical accounting and tax matters
- History of working in an accounting function in a fast‑growing, dynamic work environment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with preparing Form 990 and not‑for‑profit accounting and tax
- Ability to translate business objectives into financial data structures used to support measurement of performance, with a keen eye for simplification
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
- Demonstrated ability to implement required accounting systems, policies, and processes
- Experience supporting implementation of Netsuite, Concur, or other ERPs
- Track record of designing, rationalizing, implementing, and documenting internal controls
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the development of accounting systems, policies, and practices to ensure the timeliness and accuracy of financial information
- Responsible for preparing monthly internal financial statements, including preparing/reviewing journal entries and reconciling accounts
- Complete the month‑end close procedures
- Prepare month‑end financial statements and variance analyses
- Contribute to the preparation and review of project accounting for different projects
- Assist with lease accounting process and identify components under ASC 842
- Assist in developing accounting policies and procedures to support a strong internal control environment
- Work with external accounting and tax preparation providers to support annual filing and reporting requirements (e.g., audited financial statements, Form 990, etc.)
- Coordinate with state and local tax filings
- Collaborate with the accounts payable/expense team
