Responsibilities In the Geologist 2 role, the employee will perform professional work including review, evaluation, and recommendations under limited supervision. Key duties include:
Reviewing Groundwater Protection Plans (GPPs) required for individual permits authorized under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
Reviewing GPPs for industrial facilities operating under general permits authorized by NPDES.
Reviewing GPPs for Class D Solid Waste Facilities.
Reporting results of GPP reviews to permit writers and/or managers.
Communicating with applicants on GPP requirements and corrections needed for complete plans.
Assisting in the development, testing, and training for an online permitting system and following the standard protocols.
Traveling to sites for field inspections, including GPP sites, sensitive receptors, groundwater remediation activities, groundwater protection activities, or permitted injection points.
Researching, collecting, and documenting groundwater characterization parameters, remediation activities/sites, and UIC Class 5 injection points for mapping activities.
Performing other duties as assigned.

Regular attendance is essential.
Applicants will complete an internet‑based profile assessment to evaluate thinking and reasoning skills, behavioral traits, and occupational interests.
Selected candidate subject to a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) search before hiring and annually thereafter.
Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a major in Geology.
Experience: Two years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid professional experience in geology, soil mechanics or related field.
Alternatively, completed graduate study in Geology from an accredited institution may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the experience requirement.
Certification‑Areas of Assignment: Must have completed six semester hours or have one year of professional geologic experience in the area of specialization. Acceptable specializations include Coal Geology, Environmental Geology, Hydrology/Water Resources Geology, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Geology, Petroleum Geology, Land Reclamation/Soil Geology, Structural Geology.
Preference for degrees or experience in geological modeling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), karst environments, and/or hydrogeology.
Complete work history required.
