Overview
Subrogation Specialist
Location: Remote | United States
Type: 1099 | Independent Contractor
Our client has an immediate need for an experienced Subrogation Specialist to join their team as an independent contractor.
If you thrive on solving problems, negotiating resolutions, and driving results through proactive follow-up, this role offers the independence and flexibility you’ve been looking for. You’ll manage your own caseload, set your own cadence, and directly influence recovery outcomes — without the constraints of a traditional claims environment.
In this role, you will investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and settle assigned subrogation recovery claims, primarily involving commercial transportation. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who brings tenacity, strong follow-through, and innovative problem-solving to secure successful recoveries.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
Manage an active inventory of approximately 100–125 claim files, maintaining consistent contact with identified third parties to achieve monthly recovery goals.
Review, analyze, and process documentation and inquiries related to first-party physical damage, cargo, property, and workers’ compensation claims.
Collaborate with clients to ensure accurate and timely preparation of all claim documentation.
Investigate, analyze, and determine liability and recovery potential, effectively negotiating settlements with adverse parties.
Assess cause of action, recoverable damages, liability, and expense exposure to develop an effective recovery strategy.
Prepare and present demand packages to adverse third parties, ensuring timely and accurate payment of settlements.
Maintain regular, proactive communication (approximately 30–40 calls and emails per day) to drive negotiations and settlement activity.
Negotiate and settle claims within delegated authority, striving for efficient and favorable resolution of each case.
Maintain an up-to-date claim diary and detailed documentation for all assigned files.
Build and maintain professional, collaborative relationships with clients and third parties.
Process all subrogation claim assignments within one business day of receipt.
Identify and appropriately refer files requiring Department of Insurance or legal counsel involvement.
Stay informed of case law, statutes, and industry trends impacting subrogation practices.
Experience & Background
Familiarity with multi-line commercial coverage (auto, cargo, property, or workers’ compensation) and/or prior experience in claims handling, subrogation, or insurance adjusting preferred (typically 3+ years, or equivalent transferable experience).
Transportation claims experience is a strong plus.
Proven ability to manage a high-volume workload with discipline and persistence, maintaining proactive follow-up and thorough documentation across all activities.
Skills & Core Competencies
Tenacity & Follow-Through
Demonstrates persistence and resilience when handling challenging negotiations or non-responsive third parties. Maintains steady progress and accountability through proactive follow-up and closure.
Innovation & Critical Thinking
Identifies creative approaches to overcome barriers and maximize recovery opportunities. Assesses complex fact patterns to develop effective, customized strategies.
Communication & Negotiation
Communicates clearly and professionally in both written and verbal interactions. Navigates sensitive or high-stakes conversations with composure and confidence.
Organization & Independence
Operates efficiently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, remote environment. Manages multiple priorities, maintains accurate records, and consistently meets deadlines.
Professionalism & Collaboration
Builds trust and credibility through reliable communication and respectful interactions. Demonstrates integrity and teamwork in all client and third-party relationships.
Technical Proficiency
Proficient in Microsoft Office, PDF tools, and claims management systems.
