This is a 5-week summer position, full-time (day and evening commitment from June 20 – August 1, 2026) with part-time work beginning March/April 2026. The position includes room and board. Salary is $8,500.

This position is for the National High School Institute located in Evanston at Northwestern University.

Job Description The Residence Hall Director is the legal guardian of the students during the summer in the absence of their parents [IN LOCO PARENTIS]. The Residence Hall Director is responsible for the health and well-being of the students and is the disciplinarian for instances outside of the curricular program. The Director must model responsible behavior, demonstrate strong leadership, and be well-versed in NHSI disciplinary policies. The Director must be available and on call, with a focus on student and staff safety, health, and well-being. The Director will organize logistics beginning in May, including scheduling, orientation materials, and coordination with university offices and housing staff.

Key responsibilities include coordination of move-in days, staff orientation for resident assistants, supervision of the residence hall staff for the summer, administration of student arrival materials, coordination of health service appointments, and communication with campus liaisons (housing, housekeeping, health services). The Director will also oversee maintenance needs, delegate tasks, and maintain confidentiality of health information. The Director is expected to be present at daily meetings and sleep in the residence hall each night during the program.

Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate two move-in days: one for staff, one for students.

Run a morning-long residence hall orientation for staff to train them as resident assistants (RAs).

Serve as direct supervisor to the residence hall staff for the entirety of the summer, with the Division Director.

Administer the arrival of 160+ students and deliver all orientation materials and information on their arrival day.

Coordinate scheduling and getting students to health service appointments.

Act as IN LOCO PARENTIS when necessary to accompany students to the emergency room.

Be privy to and responsible for the health history of each student; maintain confidentiality.

Coordinate maintenance with Campus Housing Services and housekeeping staff; delegate tasks as needed.

Be in direct contact with parents regarding health or disciplinary issues when necessary.

Oversee weekly community service and related activities.

Attend the daily 11:00 am meeting to receive updates and guidance.

Sleep in the residence hall on the faculty wing every night; be on call for emergencies.

Oversee daily mail delivery to students.

Qualifications

College degree, preferably with a focus on Education and/or Social Work.

Excellent communication and organizational skills; strong leadership experience; good sense of humor.

Live in the residence hall from June 23 – August 2 (dates may vary slightly).
