Data Engineering Manager - Hybrid/Bellevue, WA

Job Overview
The Manager, Data Engineering is a technical and hands-on leadership role responsible for the design and development of Brook’s data infrastructure, pipelines, and modeling frameworks. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, this role will enable real-time and batch data workflows that power analytics, clinical insights, AI capabilities, and product experiences. The Manager will lead a growing team of data engineers, collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, and play a critical role in shaping Brook’s data strategy and architecture.
This role is based in Bellevue, WA (Hybrid), and some travel may be required. All members of the Engineering team are based in the Pacific Time Zone to support real-time collaboration and agile development.
Key Responsibilities
Lead Brook’s data infrastructure strategy: Oversee the design, implementation, and scaling of Brook’s data infrastructure, including ETL/ELT pipelines, warehouse architecture, and data governance frameworks.
Own data modeling and architecture: Define and maintain the data modeling strategy for analytics, operations, and product workflows to ensure maintainability, accuracy, and scalability.
Guide technical architecture and development: Direct architectural decisions and hands-on development using modern data stacks such as Snowflake, dbt, and AWS.
Build and mentor a high-performing team: Manage, mentor, and develop a collaborative data engineering team focused on technical excellence, reliability, and innovation.
Ensure data quality and observability: Maintain reliability, integrity, lineage, and observability across all data environments to support consistent and trusted insights.
Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with Analytics, AI/ML, and Product teams to design foundational datasets and services that drive data-informed decision-making and innovation.
Establish engineering best practices: Implement and uphold best practices for testing, CI/CD, documentation, and cost optimization within data infrastructure.
Contribute to complex data workflows: Review and contribute code for advanced data pipelines and infrastructure enhancements, ensuring performance and reliability.
Drive modernization and scalability initiatives: Lead efforts in performance tuning and modernization, including event streaming, real-time ingestion, and hybrid data architectures.
Maintain a hands-on technical role: Dedicate at least 60% of time to coding, architecture design, and critical incident resolution to stay deeply connected to the technology.
Innovate with AI-driven tools: Evaluate and implement AI-enhanced solutions for pipeline monitoring, schema validation, and anomaly detection to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications
Deep expertise in data modeling, ETL/ELT architecture, and building robust, scalable data platforms.
Proficiency in SQL, Python, and tools such as dbt, Airflow, and Snowflake (or similar cloud warehouses).
Strong background in cloud-native data architecture, preferably AWS.
Proven ability to work hands-on and guide technical teams through deep-dive problem solving.
Strong collaboration skills across engineering, analytics, and business teams.
Experience building data systems to support analytics, operations, and AI/ML applications.
Preferred Experience
Minimum 10 years of experience in data engineering or backend infrastructure roles.
Minimum 3 years of experience managing engineering teams with demonstrated success in execution and leadership.
Hands-on experience with healthcare data platforms, clinical data integration, or HIPAA/SOC 2 compliance.
Experience with event-driven architecture and real-time data processing.
Prior experience in high-growth startups or regulated industries.
