Position Summary The Director, Engineering is a hands‑on technical and people leader responsible for scaling Brook’s engineering organization across the United States and internationally. This role oversees a multidisciplinary team spanning backend, frontend, and mobile development, driving engineering excellence, reliability, and innovation across regions. Reporting to the Vice President, Engineering, the Director will define and execute Brook’s technical roadmap, ensuring the platform is secure, scalable, and positioned to support continued company growth. The Director partners closely with Product, Data, and Clinical Operations to deliver high‑quality, compliant, and user‑centered technology solutions that directly impact patient outcomes. The Director balances hands‑on technical leadership with strategic direction—fostering a high‑performing, inclusive, and collaborative engineering culture across distributed teams, including oversight of Brook’s engineering team in Mexico. This position is based in Bellevue, WA (Hybrid), and may require domestic and international travel.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, grow, and mentor engineering teams across the U.S. and internationally, ensuring alignment, communication, and shared technical standards across locations.
Define and execute the technical roadmap to support Brook’s product and business goals, ensuring scalability, security, and cost efficiency.
Oversee the architecture and system design of Brook’s platform, ensuring reliability, performance, and maintainability across backend, frontend, and mobile systems.
Partner with Product, Data, and Clinical Operations teams to deliver high‑quality, compliant, and impactful software for patients, providers, and internal teams.
Establish and enforce modern software development practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, documentation, and code review standards.
Lead strategy and optimization of Brook’s cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), ensuring compliance with HIPAA and SOC 2 while maintaining cost efficiency and resilience.
Drive exploration and integration of emerging AI/ML tools and platforms to enhance both product capabilities and engineering productivity.
Provide hands‑on support for architecture reviews, system debugging, and critical technical challenges.
Strengthen collaboration and cohesion across U.S. and international teams, ensuring consistent communication, shared priorities, and a unified engineering culture.
Recruit, retain, and develop top engineering talent through mentorship, clear career pathways, and a focus on continuous growth and engagement.
Lead retrospectives and process reviews to enhance reliability, quality, and cross‑functional alignment across teams.
Collaborate with executive leadership on budget, vendor, and resource management to support long‑term scalability.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong leadership skills with proven success managing distributed, cross‑border engineering teams.
Deep technical expertise in backend development (Java, Python) and working knowledge of frontend (React, Angular) and mobile (React Native) technologies.
Demonstrated success designing and scaling cloud‑native, distributed systems in AWS or similar environments.
Expertise in DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure‑as‑code, and modern observability practices.
Working knowledge of data security, privacy, and compliance frameworks (HIPAA, SOC 2).
Experience adopting and integrating AI/ML tools into product and engineering workflows.
Strong architectural judgment with a balance of technical depth and business pragmatism.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills across multiple teams and time zones.
Proven ability to develop engineering talent and build a culture of transparency, trust, and accountability.
Passion for combining technology and healthcare to improve patient outcomes.
Preferred Experience
Minimum 12 years of experience in software engineering roles.
Minimum 6 years in engineering leadership (Manager, Senior Manager, or Director level) within fast‑paced, product‑driven environments.
Experience leading multidisciplinary and internationally distributed teams.
Proven success in cloud infrastructure management, DevOps transformation, or platform scaling initiatives.
Background in healthcare technology or regulated environments (HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST).
Familiarity with LLMs, RAG, or other applied AI technologies in production systems.
Prior experience scaling engineering organizations from early‑stage to growth‑stage startups.
