Leave of Absence and Benefits Specialist
Position Information The American Museum of Natural History is a leading scientific and cultural institution whose mission is to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through research, education, and exhibition. The Human Resources department is seeking a full-time Leave of Absence & Benefits Specialist to coordinate leave of absence programs and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, including FMLA, Paid Family Leave (PFL), Workers’ Compensation, Disability, and Military leave. The specialist serves as the primary contact for employee leave inquiries and assists with benefits administration processes. The role requires excellent customer service, interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and organizational/time management skills.
Responsibilities
Prepare, complete, and maintain required correspondence and forms for leave of absence administration.
Process and maintain accurate records and reports of all leave activity.
Counsel employees on leave of absence processes.
Assist with managing ADA accommodations and processes.
Assist with benefits inquiries from employees and administration of health and welfare plans and wellness programs.
Liaise with payroll, leave of absence vendors, and union disability departments.
Prepare and process NYS Paid Family Leave compliance filings.
Salary and Benefits The expected salary range is $60,000–$70,000 annually. This position is overtime-eligible. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our diverse community. Pay is determined based on factors including skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, and experience.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Three years of experience in benefits administration.
In-depth knowledge of leave of absence programs and applicable federal and state laws (e.g., HIPAA, FMLA, PFL).
Proven knowledge of benefits and HRIS systems.
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
Benefits-related certifications (e.g., CEBS, SHRM).
Physical Demands
May remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods.
Occasional ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
Mobility around the Museum campus as needed.
