Electric Drive System Modeling Engineer

Tesla, Palo Alto, California, United States, 94306

Save Job

What To Expect Tesla is seeking a motivated engineer for research and development of electric motors. This position is critical to the development of high-performance, high-efficiency, and low-cost electric powertrains for Tesla’s current and future electric vehicles. The successful candidate will work with the motor research team to develop and improve the loss model, flux linkage model, and control model; design and optimize electric powertrains; develop test plans; and perform measurements in the dyno lab.

What You’ll Do

Develop cohesive simulation models for 3‑phase and multi‑phase motors, for both finite element analysis and dynamic motor control.

Develop motor fault behavior models and design fault handling strategies.

Develop high‑frequency motor models to couple with drive inverter switching models.

Traction motor design: use design tools to evaluate large populations of motors and derive the optimal powertrain system for electric vehicles.

Support new motor development, collaborating across teams for motor validation and reporting.

Support production change and expansion, evaluating new materials and manufacturing technologies.

Develop motor control simulation models and support motor control firmware development.

What You’ll Bring

Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Strong mathematical and physical understanding of electrical machinery.

Expertise in finite element simulation.

Knowledge of motor control theory.

Strong MATLAB or Python programming skills.

Experience in electric motor loss characterization.

Experience with NVH analysis in electric motors and drive units (system preferred).

Experience with insulation systems preferred.

Expertise in magnetic materials preferred.

Experience in electric motor design or manufacturing.
